Does anyone know how to register an NPO through the CIPC site. There is no clear path and there is only info on registering businesses which my GF mistakenly did. Is it possible to change a company into an NPO?

Thanks for the help.

Another thing, NPOs are registered with the Department of Social Development on the NPO website.

www.npo.gov.za
This will get you an NPO number. You can also get more info at www.dsd.gov.za

NPO Non Profit Organisation
NPC Non Profit Company

NPO registration is also optional. Often only required if you want to apply for government grants.

An NPC is a company in terms of the companies act. This means auditors and other expensive admin overheads.

If the entity is small enough you only need a review, which is less work.
The reviewer must be a registered members of a professional accounting body, and professional accounting body, should also be a member of the International Federation of Accountants,(IFAC). As such an auditor can perform it but it does not require an auditor to perform.

Not sure if you need to be registered as a NPO to be able to issue Article 18A tax certificates.

Best route to follow

Register NPC
Register with SARS for income tax
Register with DSD for NPO. Not compulsory but you will struggle to get large donations it you do not have an NPO number. I'm in the NPO sector and every funder that we have approached for funding insists on the NPO number as well as SARS S18a status.
Apply to SARS for tax exemption for approved PBOs. There are two types of PBOs, those that can issue S18a certificates and those that cannot. There are two PBA(Public Benefit Activities) lists. The first list contains all approved PBAs and the second list is a subset of the first and consists of PBAs that allow you to issue S18a certificates to donors that will allow them to deduct the donation from their taxable income.
