How do I remove grub from my system without a windows install cd?

I have an acer veriton that I was trying to use as an htpc, but it didn't work, so I bought a HP Microserver instead. I am now replacing an ailing xp machine at my office with the Veriton.

I have used the recovery CD's I got with the machine to restore XP Pro onto it and it completed succefully, but it now boots into grub rescue instead of into the os.

I dont have XP cd's with me here and I would like to get this sorted today.

I know that Hirens boot disk has an app to repair the MBR, but I dont want to waste 600mb downloading the whole thing. Is there not something smallish that I can stick onto my usb to fix it?

If 600megs is an issue I think you have bigger problems. Start with getting uncapped.

Dude I have uncapped hat home, I dont need quantity at the office I need speed.

I have everything I need at home, but like I said, I want to sort it today while I'm at the office.

Does the PC have a secondary drive? If you used the recovering CDs grub should be removed.

I thought it would, but it doesn't.

No second drive.. I think I figured it out tho. I'm trying to make a bootable USB and only putting the apps I need on it.

I'm following the instructions from Hirens site.

Ok so all I've managed to do is make it worse.

Now the pc will not see the drive at all.

If I take it out and plug it into my pc the file system is intact. I think I must have somehow completely deleted the MBR :(

How would one go about restoring the mbr while its connected to my pc as a secondary?

Edit: Figured it out: I used MiniTool Partition Wizard. The important thing to note is that you need to click on the DISK and not the partition in order for the option to become available. (that little tidbit cost me about 1/2 an hour)

That should be obvious seeing the MBR does not reside in the partition :p

Sorry, could not resist.

yes yes .. :o

It was more of a case of thinking I was selecting the disk, but actually selecting the partition instead.
