For the first time in the many years I have used the web I have become involved in a usage dispute with a service provider. I am not a noob and use a range of checks and balances to make sure my bandwidth isn't sapped by unauthorized use. I use a wired connection and when I do use wireless it is with WPA2 encryption and a 23 character PSK.
What I don't have, is any idea how to retrieve a log file of all IPs accessed through my router during a specific time. I don't have any specific software installed that will provide this data, as a single user on a hard wired line I have never had reason to keep back-dated logs in the past.
I am really hoping that there is a log file I can retrieve somewhere in XP, my router only has logs for the past 24 hours and I need the logs from 3 days ago.
In a nutshell I bought 1GB of prepaid rollover unshaped bandwidth late on Tuesday due to the SEACOM problem. On Thursday morning I switched back to my regular provider. According to the company's usage stats I had downloaded more than 500MB of that data from 6pm to 5am the next morning, a time I know for a fact I was not online or downloading anything.
On top of this I only have a 348kps line and SAECOM was down until 3AM that morning, so international download speeds were still being severely affected until at least 3AM.
I also find it highly suspicious this sudden unexpected bandwidth usage happened so close to the end of the month, essentially eliminating all of the bandwidth that would’ve rolled over.
I use the internet for business and my average monthly usage is around 2-3 gigabytes. Freakish how I managed (according to this lot) a gigabyte in just under two days.
