How to RIP DVD's to iTunes:

I got a new iPod Touch (Yay).

I've been trying to find out how to rip DVD's (I own the original DVD's) to iTunes.
Google comes up with 100's of what look like ads for ripping software. I don't really want to install a bunch of different software so am looking for some info on stuff that works.

I have VLC and that seems to be doing the job but it's takes as long as the DVD plays to rip. Eg a 2 hour movie take 2 hours to rip. Maybe I have a wrong setting or something like that.

Does anyone have advice on what to use or how to do this?

Ripping is a notoriously slow process. If you're using codecs that are optimised for multi-core processors, and you have a multi-core processor, things may speed-up a notch. But yeah, it takes fairly long.
 
Try Airvideo as well - works well for converting MKV, VOB and AVI into MP4 format and you can do it from the touch ;)
 
Mac The Ripper ftw! Takes 15 - 20 minutes for a standard length dvd. Only function it lacks when compared with DVD Shrink (The windows equivalent) is it does not recompress the dvd to the standard 4.7gb file size (for dvds over 4,7gb). That sucks. You have to use Toast to do that which takes another 20 - 30 minutes. But that's for copying DVD's. (Ahem! I mean 'backing up DVD's I already own')

To create a single file video for I-tunes / Quicktime playback, I use Mac The Ripper to decode the .vob's - and Visual Hub to convert the .vob's to mp4 selecting the 'stitch video files together' option. Can;t go wrong with mp4 on any Mac product.

Never heard of RipIt? It is my go to tool. When it fails,MTR comes out of the box. And I have not touched MTR in months.

It is also a PITA to license MTR...
 
Mac The Ripper is great, but has not been developed in a while, hence it can't rip the new dvd's from studios like Dreamworks, Paramount and Disney. I bought RipIt for Mac and it works like a dream with the new studios. I also bought Mac Blu-Ray Ripper Pro to rip all my blu-ray movies, also works faultless, took a bit long thou per title because blu-rays are big in size. Theres nothing better then to plug your 2TB HD into your media player (Xtreamer 1080p FullHD) browse your entire collection and hit play. DVD files are upscaled to 1080p HD with DTS or Dolby 5.1 / 6.1 Audio, Blu-rays remain in HD with either DTS-HD MA / Dolby TtuHD. Njoy!!
