I have chef's knifes that I use for cooking. No one else allowed to use them as they get stuffed into the dish washer then on the drying rack and the blades get dinged beyond repair that way. So my knives lie in the drawer in their original sheaths but that is also not ideal. My thought was to make a shelf with slots and mount it to the wall so that the knives hang in the slots. The slots parallel to the wall so you dont cut yourself. I have a wooden knife block but I dont like them cause of all the possible gunk inside the slots. Also the block is too small for my bread knife & chefs knife.

So what are the comments on the slotted shelf idea?

Even scrap metal dealers in your area might have some! and get a nice piece Ash wood and you are off!!

@home have the plastic and stainless steel ones for like R60!

Chefs around the world use knife bags/rolls to keep their knives. the magnetic knife holders are more the domestic/catering kitchen style.

for display purposes, the magnetic option is probably best.

what brand chef knifes do you have ?

I made one, similar to the wooden ones in the 2nd post link, pretty simply with a router and a block of Oregon pine floorboard off-cut. I bought magnets from Allmag in CT - http://www.allmag.co.za/contact-us.html

The magnets came to around R300.

Those stands suck for ceramic knives. I just keep them in their original Kyocera containers.

What Roxi recommend is good, otherwise there are wall mountable magnetic strips specifically for knives.

Personally I keep mine in their original boxes I a drawer right next to the sharpener so they get sharpened as they go in or come out.
