I am a desktop app programmer and I would like some advice as to how to move to web based development.
I see that in many .net jobs, asp.net is required which I don't have ( including html/css/javascript etc.).

One thing I learned the hard way is it will take time to learn these, but I'm not sure whether I should start buying books or start learning from tutorials and in which order I should start learning asp/html/css etc..

Any guidance will be appreciated, thanks.

Main motivation for moving into web development is for more career opportunities, broaden experience and possibly freelancing in the future.

What is your current skillet?

Definitely start HTML, css, javascript then take it from there.

Which programming language do you currently use?
If it is c#, the transition to asp will be easy.

Start of with tutorials, once you are comfortable with the basics you can go with books (if you wish).
HTML/CSS/Javascript works "together", so you will need to learn them all @ once.
Look @ http://thenewboston.org/tutorials.php

They have some interesting tutorials on Javascript etc.

Some good books here: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/ebooks/

Getting into Web development is dead easy as there is a massive demand for developers in South Africa, but making a success of it is a different story.

You better off staying in app development and rather moving into mobile app dev if its a financial decision. I personally got into web dev 12mths back and now leaving it as I've nearly hit my ceiling. Unless you manage to do kickass sites, its not worth it (and very, very boring).

Enough said, on your original question look at learning PHP and start off using Wordpress. Play around with Javascript, HTML5 and responsive desisns (CSS).

Ok, I'll learn html/css/javascript. I'll learn asp.net lightly from this book
as it has good reviews.

I'll have to do some project on the side then to get that confidence when you know what you can do, or maybe find a position that allows learning web-based on the job because you can only do so much after work.

I'll look at website development first because mobile apps are sometimes done after a website is available for convenience, plus
mobile apps usually integrate with a website which is why I want to do web first.

I am not sure what cbrunsdonza done, but I disagree with his assessment as you can make lots of money in Web application development. You can start off with asp.net (there are tons of good resources on the web). That would just form the basis for progressing on to say Sharepoint development (good skills are scarce). Learning html/css/javascript is a given and you are expected to know that as a web developer (well everywhere I worked at least).

There are some .net guys at my work that don't know any html at all :D
