Hi there and thanx for your help.

I constantly have DSL connection dropped; about 4-5 times per hour. It drops for up to 5 minutes and then recovers/connects again. I want to troubleshoot this since I have bought a new router on 4 July 2013. WebAfrica is my ISP and they have checked everything and reported the problem to Telkom. They sent someone without anyone at home and left a message on a piece of paper saying that the line is OK. the problem is that it is intermittent and probably was working 100% OK during the 5 minutes the techie tested the line. This afternoon alone connection was dropped about 8 times.

Is there a way I can troubleshoot the router? I don't want to act like an idiot by swapping the router and in the mean time test the router?

Regards,
Deon

Telkom sometimes send a telephone technician to check the line. If so the techie will listen for a dial tone: if he gets one the line is OK :)

OTOH, if your line was checked by a DSL technician, he will have used his own router.

In either case he will have needed to gain access to your home.

Best call Telkom - with your reference number - and report the line as still problematic. Also ask if the techie can come when you are available (e.g. during the weekend) and for him to first call to make an appointment.

NB: Best publish your readings for S/N ratio, line attenuation etc. This will help the propeller-heads on the forum help you with a diagnosis.

Well, I experienced dropped connections on a wifi router, that was fixed by upgrading the firmware of the router. I know someone else here on mybb had the same thing and it was also fixed by upgrading firmware so maybe try upgrading it if possible?

I didn't notice that the router included wireless.

Is the ADSL connection via wireless being dropped, or is the ADSL connection to a PC plugged into the router being dropped ?

Mine was also dropping quite a lot today, could be a national problem...

Hi all and thanx for the replies.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that it is wired to a Telkom plug. It is this connection that was dropping. It is stable though since 17:22. I hope it stays this way. {fingers crossed}

You do have a POTS filter as well correct?

Hi There,
Check the pots. You can also plug the line directly into the outlet and see if the connection stays up.
If it does and then goes down when you putthe pots back in place then the pots is the problem.

Failing that do what rrh says and get the technician into the property for an hour or so ( offer them coffee and biscuits when they arrive)

Regards

Tim
