How to update BF3 using someone else's patch

Hi guys.

So I see a lot of you have 384kbps lines and didn't / couldn't yet download the latest 4GB BF3 patch.

Also seems like some of you are having trouble updating it using a copied patch.
The quick-guide below is trivial, but some of us (including myself) struggled a bit to get it working.

Here's how you do it:

  • Get the patch from a buddy, it should be in an "updates" folder in his BF3 install folder. The patch is called "Xpack1". My buddy's "XPack1" folder was 2.9GB (Where the patch is supposed to be 3.9GB)
  • Copy this to the corresponding folder on your PC
  • Now open Origin, if it's already busy downloading the patch, stop it by clicking the "X" next to the status bar.
  • In Origin, open up "Settings" in the top right corner.
  • Under the "General" tab, tick "Keep installers after games have been installed"
  • Now the important part: Where it says "Select where you want to store your game installers", set this folder to the folder you copied the "Xpack1" into. Now close Origin to make sure its saving your settings.
  • You now need to restart Origin and maybe even BattleLog, I find it easiest to just restart your whole PC.
  • Once Origin starts back up, it will look like its doing something, counting up towards something like 15.4GB or even 20GB, just let it go.
  • Origin still downloaded another 133MB after this process on my PC, at least its not 3.9GB
  • This is what worked for me and a couple of others, hope it helps another one of you out :D

Lastly: Thanks Dusty (Dusty36 in game) for my copy of the patch :)

Rather write the whole Update folder, just to be sure. There should be 2 folders in there, Patch and Xpack1.

Yip.

I did this when I had problems with my installation and had to format my HDD. It works 100%

As I said it's quite trivial, you actually just tell Origin where to look for the updates :)
Best to copy over everything, as some okes may have deleted their old updates.

This is a guess, but I think the patch would only have been 3.9GB for guys without any of the previous updates.
So if you went out and bought the game today you'd only download the 3.9GB XPack1 and not the other two updates.
If you already had the other two updates, your Xpack1 would be 2.9GB and the other updates combined the remaining 1GB.

My biggest gripe is that people think it's not possible so don't upload or share the files locally. I could rape it off the net at work if someone uploaded it. But I'm sorted now thanks to Killa. Hope we can sort something out for any other BIG patches that might come :p

My upload speed sucks. Tried uploading to filegooi last night but it would take like 2 days. I'll try uploading again from work, if there is interest.

Guys,

Help me quick:

When I specify the forlder of which I added the new patch as well as Xpack1 it says "invalid folder specified" ...
It's in the same place the other patches was but origin says it's invalid :(

Ok I'm going to try the following:

Created a dummy folder with the 2 patches in it named: Update and Xpack1
I have now directed Origin there. Let's see what happens...

I got it working perfectly when I installed the game, for some reason it's just being difficult tonight :(

AT LONG FK'NG LAST !!!!!

Working, see you guys in a sec :p

Sigh, I give up. Not it's counting up to 14.9GB then just keep on counting.

I'm going to bed now and will leave it to count up to a few TB will check it in the morning :D

edit:

After a last ditch attempt and fiddeling with it a bit it rushed through the 14.9GB's from 00.01% then went to the 133MB download. Seems to be working now. Let's see. 2 more minutes to go :p

Skaapbal jy's lekker ongeduldig :D

That's exactly what its supposed to do :)
Weird how it goes crazy like that (counting up to 15GB) and then finishes.
I also wonder what the 133MB is.

Yea,

I kinda think I was just being inpatient
Anyway, it's working now. I owe Killa a big bottle of brandy. Would have given him a Klippies last night but he was working :D

If u guys are downloading or want to download the patch from a torrent

http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/6869630/Battlefield.3.Update3-ALI213

I can confirm it works.

Open origin games folder, open battlefield 3, open updates and delete the 2 folders if u have them.
Install update.
Right click on battlefield 3 icon in origin and select repair installation.
There, u done.
I just had to download a tiny 400kb patch or file or something.
You might download nothing or yours may be bigger.

Good luck and enjoy!!!
