I am on a lekker fast wireless connection and thought that updating Windows 8 would be a breeze. My Windows 8 was installed and registered today; Now I need to update it. I have gone through all possible options and my network is running well. Windows wants to install 68 updates, some 871MB. The download simply does NOT start at all. Not that I haven't tried all the user options at least 3-4 times today.

Being me, I just had to test a Linux site and am downloading MakuluLinux (Thanks, Jacque!) at a sweet speed of 2.01mbps.

(If only I could run Outlook in Linux....................... and not in W(h)ine!)

Anyhow, anyone out there have a fix to coerce Windows 8 into updating itself?

Solution:

Just try over and over, eventually it did download and install. Maybe after it realized that I was on the internet.......at some point in time, after my initial post, Windows asked for an Internet connection while I was happily downloading away. No logic, but then it is Windows!

Control Panel > System & Security > Windows Update

Check for updates.

It might look like it's doing nothing, but when it finally shows a progress indicator, it will be on 97% .

Just check your wifi properties under Performance in Task Manager and you'll see something is happening. ;)

This might or might not fix your problem but you can download WSUS Offline and download all the updates for Windows 8 offline so that if you ever have to download updates again you can just use this program to save bandwidth.

It is in the fine print

Thanks, Kingrob, but you have missed some details I had penned down. I have done all you suggested and more,,,,,,,,,the situation is that I am plagued by a most stupendous piece of software %&$# that doesn't function as expected. Windows 8 is the most frustrating thing since CP/M-80. Good grief, I have used various network monitors that all showed that Windoze Ate was decidedly not downloading a single bit.

It is just a piece of worthless dung designed to turn a compliant person into a raging bull.

Thanks, NomNom, I am pursuing this tomorrow. Microsoft should be de-registered, its buildings formatted with a bulldozer and then we can start afresh and perhaps get something useful out of Seattle. If you see how sweet Linux Mint 15 Cinnamon is doing the same job, and it is freeware.

I know exactly what you're talking about! :)

However, my work notebook came with Windows 8, and I got the Pro upgrade for R130, so wasn't prepared to spend R3000 on a copy of Windows 7 Pro - so at the end I had to make peace with Windows 8.

And it does grow on you, especially if you have a low-budget Core i3 notebook like I have. It's actually superfast!

typo

I also run it on an i3 and was pleasantly surprised at the speed. It does eat a lot of RAM and it surely is much faster on even the latest Mint 13 Cinnamon, which is "bloatware" in Linux world. It should work well on touch devices. By year-end, we should have decent touch notebooks with Haswell cpu chips. This little machine I have now is just an interim thing; my old laptop died a tragic death after 11 years of excellent service and I was daft enough to have sold my much newer Thinkpad.

I am busy with NomNom's suggested update and I am posting screen shots here, also to show one of a number of ways to monitor netstats from http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/

The download was 2.01GB at an average speed of 299kb/s and peaking at 860kb/s.

Am now running DoUpdate and awaiting to see the end result, or the next step.

Now all you need to do is go to the folder called "Client" then double click "UpdateInstaller" tick what you want updated then click Start.

Also I recommend you get a different anti-virus, Mcafee is rubbish.

Free: avast, Microsoft Security Essentials
Paid: ESET, Kaspersky, Bitdefender

McAfee, as Avast, are rubbish. Thanks for the advice. Avast has been caught inserting spyware into users' computers.

As for updating:
Thanks, this is what I did but it did not respond. Second time around, it partially installed. I then packed away the laptop, took a walk in the rain and returned. Rebooted and then it started installing when asked to.

Thanks again for the help.

(And I am happily downloading Mint 15 Olivia with Cinnamon again.)
