How to upgrade Telkom line

I'm not very technical orientated and fairly new to the whole DSL scene. When recently moved house and had to apply for a dsl line at Telkom. They informed me that my line can only sync at 384kbps maximum.:twisted: Since I was in a hurry to get the service going, we just accepted the 384 line. However, now (a couple of months later) I'm considering upgrading to a 4meg line at my service provider. My question is therefore:

What needs to happen to my line to be able to run/sync 4meg dsl? Does Telkom have to replace my line, and how much will this cost more or less. I don't want to go stand in those terrible telkom lines at the Telkom shop if it can be avoided, hence my question. Maybe somebody out there is/was in the same boat as me. Also, is there any online tests that can test my maximum possible line speed?

Call 10219 and ask if your exchange now now handle/offer a faster line speed.
Line speeds are determined by exchange in your area ("slots" or even technology DSLAM I think?)--there is no installation or replacement of line (physical), but rather a switch issue at the exchange. I also started with 384K 2 years ago because TELKOM only had that speed in my area. Now I called them last week to see if they had upgraded their services, and they did. Now they offer up to 4MB/s lines. So just call and check. Upgrading to a faster line is done seamlessly on telkom's side.

Do you know how far away from your exchange you live? If you log into your router can you see what your Noise Margin and Attenuation are and post that here? Seems a bit weird that they tell you you can only sync at 384...

That kinda depends on why it could only sync at 384kbps.....i was told the same thing when i moved and i still ended up with a 4mbit line since they generally dont know what their talking about. But if you are actually to far form the exchange then u wont be able to get 4mbit. Phone them and ask them to upgrade it to 4mbit, see what they say.

Yip, took the long road to the Telkom shop to apply for 4meg line. Unfortunately their systems were down (ironic). The guy took my details - so lets hope and see what happens. During the updating period of my one game it indicates downloads of ± 200+ kb/s with rsync. . Is this an indication that the line may well be 4meg capable, and that telkom doesn't know their stuff? Or does that work differently (rsync). Rsync download updates from multiple sites simultaneous. But thats not the point, the point is it downloads at incredible speeds through this line.
