how trustworthy are customised Windows O/S?

Personally I won't even download that stuff. You never know what else they did to it that's not in the description.
Just leave it alone, Microsoft ISO's are fine.

Backdoors are build into those things most probably
 
Download an image of an original MS installation disc and check it against the MD5 hash.

Then customise it yourself. There are plenty of tutorials around on how to customise it.
 
Reputable source would be Microsoft.

What's wrong with the vanilla version? The fact that you need to pay for it?

Nope just stay away, nothing cool about it anyway. Download your own themes if you want a different look.

Well, my experience is limited to a Windows 7 version I installed for a friend year's ago - at his request.
It gave us endless problems, rebooting at odd occasions.
Eventually just wiped it and started fresh with a proper copy.

Stay well away, even if there isn't anything suspect, you WILL run into problems later on. Happened to various people I know with various different versions of Windows 7. Ended up having to reinstall windows for them and only after the 3rd time did they move onto a legit version and no problems after that.

so nobody here has installed dark edition win7 on a spare machine and checked what harmful things it has on it?

I do believe what you are saying with regards to it being dodgy, but surely some should be safer?
I mean we get games with custom installers all the time, how safe are those?

all Im saying is surely some releases are better than others?

I did it back then with XP black edition and yea backdoor galore.

Funny terrific and ports showed up on squid.

But why?

There are so many options if you are looking for a free OS.

If you *have* to have Windows just get a legal copy...

If you are referring to cracks...those are equally dodgy.

This is my point, is some more safe than others?
I realize one can load themes on a vanilla version, but the custom one gets some useful tools sometimes.

How safe are they, do they have backdoors and dodgy cracks on them?
 
You mean deactivated versions? That's what most of those labels mean. Just use windows loader and install whatever themes and such you want. There's plenty of legit options with a good reputation.
