Hi all,

Happy Monday :D:D

Quick Q,
How valuable is corporate experience. In terms of when looking for a new gig.
Discuss :p

New gig? Your band? Corporate experience is the same as when you play at Roxy's dude... except it's more structured and you can't get drunk and unruly.

Or do you mean a new job? Corporate experience vs small business isn't much different. Just a lot more red tape and frustration when you're used to an agile environment

Meant more from a weighting point of view when looking to move to another corporate in the near future.

Bob worked at Corporate A.
Applies for gig at Corporate B.

HR at Corporate B see's this and goes higher on pile.

Something along these lines.

Doing a weighting of the perks of staying VS leaving.

It all depends on the company. A small business probably would not care much for corporate employee experience unless they are in that line of business (financial or the like).

Corporates probably would like employees who have corporate experience, i.e Follow rules, go through procedure red tape, don't ask questions, basically sheep.
More specifically to your job, corporates will probably like corporate experience because they know the employee can handle Corporate stress, work levels etc.

Personally corporates can go suck a d###

Well, being in I.T you're evaluated based on your technical knowledge and experience. There's no preference with H.R when it comes to corporate experience where I currently work. Might be different for the drones though.... i just wish they would do a basic computer literacy and IQ test for some of these people... we in I.T get scrutinized like that, why not "normal" people

A well known company on your CV will obviously be more interesting for HR as they know names but not the duties within the role.
So that will probably put your name higher on the list.

The technical interview is where the real you comes out and not the face of the company that got you the interview.

Just needed to know if it gives you any kind of advantage.

Thanks. As above. Just interested to know if you have an advantage to put your foot in the door.
Not too phased by technical assessments.
If you want to work for a corporate, don't call the job a 'gig' in the interview.
Relax bru

Depends. If you wanna work at a corporate, then probably. Personally, when I hire, the less corporate the better. I like a guy who's willing to bend the rules.

Yes.

Big very successful companies you worked for add a hell of a lot of weight to your C.V. As opposed to let's say Koos and Le Roux Auditors or something.

I am not sure if the angle here is specifically with regard to IT, but .....

The corporate world is one where you become a number and where IT is a small cog in a big wheel.

Heaven forbid you should find yourself on a board of directors in the corporate world .... it has it moments :) and it has it moments :(.

Bending the rules is what people in the corp do most of the time.

Completely understand your point.
But it pays well. Much better than the enjoyable smaller dev houses.
Security vs contracting (albeit not much).

Thanks. Is just it been there is enough.
eg. Been there 8 months VS 1/2 years.

Know people have argued the benefits of jumping regularly but less than a year looks like you might have been pushed out?

Breaking them and still getting massive raises for doing so.
Like government :D
Depends on what you consider "big". Keep in mind that SARS moers your bonus to a point where you question your current position and all the work you've put in.

Pay off your Jag kinda bonus.
After taxes.
Government is much less unless you are getting kick-backs

Uhm, nope. IT staff is very much underpaid in comparison to those that are in the "business" department of the Corp.

Let's say you get a 20k bonus. That gets paid with your monthly salary. SARS taxes that whole amount and it really means F all at the end of the day.

I work in IT. While the paid with salary is true, very rarely is it something arb like 20k.
