How would you handle this situation?

I recently bought a VW Jetta 1.9 TDi with 88000km. I took delivery last week Wednesday. I was very happy with the car but this morning it won't start. It is not a battery issue as all of the other electronics work. The stater motor is also working (or at least making a noise) but the engine isn't turning at all. They claim to have serviced and checked the car before delivery. They are sending over a driver to come check it out.

What are my options? What would you be looking to achieve at this point. Would you wan't to cancel the deal (is this possible) or would you be trying to get them to fix it (they said that they would)?

Let them fix it. If they can't fix it adequately then cancel the deal.

They need to fix it first, if they can't the deal can be cancelled. Also take the VIN and phone VW confirm the mileage is right.

^^ This ^^

It could be something very simple that needs sorting out.

Legally, you can cancel the deal, but rather let them try and sort things out first - only if the whole thing becomes a mission, do you cancel.

Let them inspect the car and tell you whats wrong. If its something like the immobiliser or a flat battery then let them fix it.

possibly something simple. these cars are bulletproof in many senses, so a non starting could be a weak battery. Diesels require a STRONG battery, what could crank a petrol will not crank a diesel.

Sounds like a dead battery cell, i.e. impossible to predict.

As the others have said, let the guys have a look at it ...

Cars that sit on dealers' floors very often have pretty weak batteries when they are delivered - OK on a new car that charges it up quickly once it is driven regularly, however the battery mnay well have been tired before it was traded in, and now it's just slowly collapsing...

Popcorn time, whilst the poor OP tries to explain this noise without looking too idiotic!! ;) :p

Yeah, I can't explain it. I'll take a video when the guy comes to look at it and upload that.

This could be anything small, from the battery (confirm that you have the correct battery size), check alternator or worst case scenario, one of the glow plugs might be dead.

Let the dealer perform in-depth diagnostics and resolve the root cause for your peace of mind.

glow plugs won't stop a 1.9TDI starting. Even in winter.

Sinbad, so you are implying that all four glow plugs can be dead and the vehicle will start 100%

Please explain your statement?

Implying nothing. Stated outright that glow plug failure on a vw 1.9 tdi won't stop it starting. The end.

Our temperatures are not low enough that they are necessary.

Car parked inside or outside? If outside, it might have been the colder temp that caused it to not start, in which case - try it now in the warmer time of day.

Don't think it's been under 25 degrees for 3 days in a row in Somerset West....
