Hows does being a provisional tax payer work?

Provisional tax (when is it payable)

Good morning, hope anyone can help me here ...

I started renting my house out last year (in last year's tax season). I paid my normal tax for 2008/2009 on time.

I went now to SARS, registered for provisional tax, and now they say i must pay tax for the 2009 tax year before the end of Feb 2010. Is that true.

Shouldnt I only pay tax on the rental income for 2009 at the end of Feb 2011 ?

Or what I am missing where ?

AFAIK for March 2009 to Feb 2010 you have to pay before 28 Feb 2010. Thats with normal provisional tax, not sure about rental income.

if you register for provisional tax on e-filing, it makes your life a whole lot easy. find your income less your expenses. go to the provisional return. slot in the figure in the top line. the rest will automatically be calculated for you.
i helped out 2 tax consultants and was apalled at their rates they charged for what they actually did for people. the e-filing programme does calculations for you and this is what the tax consultants use to determine your figures.
this is why i have chosen to "open" up to people and assist where i can and make my fees as low as possible, because of the simplicity of completing the returns. there are some of my clients who don't pay me anything because all i have to do is submit the "file" button. they don't have any income and don't owe anything but they don't want the hassle of having to use the computer. they don't know how to use the programme.
my client base is now sitting at 172 and that is 2 years since i started.
and yes i only deal with individual tax i don't do VAT.

I'm registered for e-Filing for personal returns, but recently received notice that I'm now a provisional tax payer - does this mean I'm also registerd for provisional tax e-Filing ?

I've just submitted (late) my personal return, and must submit a provisional return by the end of this month.

Is it the same as the personal returns, where you only submit supporting docs if requested?

no you will have to register for provisional on e-filing as well. go to "organisations" and a list will come up. click on the "provisional" block.
