For R4999

Compaq 615
AMD X2 QL-66 (2.2GHz, 1MB L@ Cache)
1GB RAM
Windows 7 Basic

What are other options wrt processors. Even if more money has to spent.

This will be for normal office use but I want to future-proof it a bit.

I know adding more RAM will help, but will it be enough? I don't have experience and knowledge of the various processors available for laptops.

What I basically want to know is, is this AMD CPU good enough or should I go for an Intel.

That processor is fine for general office use. Need more RAM though, should be ~R400 for 2Gb, giving 3GB. Check if you have 1x1024 or 2x512. That might limit what you can add...

For office use, look around for the highest resolution you can find. In that price range though, there might not be any nice options.

Try google for a laptop review- check the ergonomics and usability etc before buying :)

Go for 2gb RAM, I reckon, that AMD processor is fine for Office work.

1. Always look at processor 1st and that s a decent one but could do with a better cache. The RAM is bad but not a biggest as can be bought another fact often overlooked (even before grapghics and extras is the speed of the HDD 5400rpm is minimum. @ what price? R7000+ and NO!

Another thing frequently overlooked is the display. Is it gloss or matt? Gloss have the unfortunate tendency to reflect any lights, windows etc back to the user. Matt might not be as crisp as a gloss display, but it does not reflect as much.

The shop here has only this laptop in supply. The person who's laptop this is going to be need this laptop today so I decided to go with this one. They will add another 1GB of RAM on monday though.

This is why linux rox. The extra RAM is only needed because windows requires more resources + the mandatory AV that MD fanboys so love.
