My friend wants to get the HP DV6 but there are so many damn models of the thing and the models in SA seem to have their own numbers, making finding overseas reviews to help a little tricky.

Incredible has a dv6-1215 and a dv6-1315 for R8999.

The former has a 500gb HD and 4gb RAM. It comes with Vista and a 2.2 ghz amd turin. The latter has a 320gb HD and 3gb RAM but comes with win7 and core 2 duo 2.2 ghz. Assuming those are right (I was scribbling quickly as the guy told me the specs over the phone) then I guess the 1215 is the better option, right? Unless the turin sucks compared to the core 2 duo?

Anyone know if there are better prices out there? Can't seem to find any for those models.

First off, my experience has made me incapable of trusting Incredible Connection salesmen. They have proven numerous times that they are willing to either lie or give out information that they aren't sure is correct, in order to sell to me.

Secondly, my experience with various notebooks, especially the HP Pavillion has taught me that one shouldn't buy an HP Pavillion without the 3-year extended care pack/warranty. Unfortunately, these machines have a habit of failing in some capacity soon after the initial one-year warranty period expires. At least, moreso than any other notebook.

Thirdly, I'd really go for that Intel chip over that AMD chip right now.

My suggestion: Go to the store itself and use the machines yourself to find out the exact specs and see how they work/feel.

The Pavillions are beautiful machines and offer great value for money - just be careful :)

Thanks for the info. So you reckon the core 2 duo is worth having less RAM and a much smaller HD?

I'll definitely go with my friend as she doesn't know much about computers, even though I've never even owned a notebook so I'm a bit useless myself.

If you know of better options for around 8-10k range please let me know.

Okay well first of all, AMD do NOT make good mobile processors. You'll want to look for an Intel processor (Core 2 Duo or i5 will give you the best performance - Go with a dual core)

I am currently looking an an ASUS laptop and have read good things about it.

It's called the ASUS N61JA and it comes with an Intel Core i5-430M 2.26GHz and 4GB ram as well as a 500GB SATAII HDD all for around R9700. It also has a 16" Screen. (Not fully HD, which is the disappointing thing about it) It has a full keyboard which is easy to type on I hear. The graphics card it comes with is an ATi Radeon HD5730 1GB DDR3 which is the best mobile card I've seen for this price range. It also has Gigabit LAN and 802.11b/g/n wireless and Bluetooth 2.1 which is a plus. Windows 7 Professional 64-bit is also included. Depending on what happens, I'll probably get this notebook myself. (Also apparently has e-Sata and USB 3.0 as well as a 2.0MP Webcam so there's futureproofing too)

You can get it at RebelTech cc for quite a good price.

You can also find a lot about the laptop on the net.

Wow, that looks great. Also love that my friend could use 64 bit.

Someone suggested I check out gigabyte notebooks which one can knock 2-3k off the price of by getting them without an OS (my friend already has win7).

Waiting to hear back after sending out some emails today but I'm looking at...

GIGABYTE InNote Notebook Q1580V
Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53GHz , 4GB DDR2 800MHz, 500GB 5400RPM HDD, 15.4" Glare Type 1280x800 , 2.0 MegaPixel Webcam, nVidia GeForceGo 9600M GS 512MB, Bluetooth.

It's R8500 and at that price the Asus is definitely the better option, but if my friend can get it for around 6k then I think I'd have to recommend that. Agree or disagree?

Agree. Yes you are going down to DDR2 and a smaller screen but you've got a nice C2D running at 2.53GHz and 4GB ram as well as a 2.0 MP Webcam. The Go 9600 is good too, if you aren't running any hecticly graphics intensive apps/games. It is a winner though with the price. I'm still hunting for a laptop myself. I'll probably end up getting the N61JA or the N71JQ (The N61 with a 17" Full HD screen and a i7) or the G73JH-A2.

What is the warranty on the Asus? Doesn't seem to say at Rebeltech. I think the gigabyte's are normally 2-3 years, which is also quite comforting.

Warranties on all ASUS products is a standard 2 years. Should be the same on the Gigabyte.
