Hi Guys,

I have two HP laptops both requiring new power supplies. I do not want to order originals as they cost way too much. Was planning on getting generics. The problem is i am not 100% sure what watt to buy. Also do the generics let you set the voltage?

The first laptop is an HP NX7010 and I have lost the charger, so i have no idea what voltage/wattage it will need. The part number on the battery is: 337607-001

The second is a Pavillon DV6600. The part number on the charger (which doesn't work anymore) is N20789. The input according to the brick is: 100-240V-1.5A 50-60hz
The output is:
19V (4.7A) 90W max

Since the first laptop is quite old, i have a feeling that the 60W generic chargers will work, but i have clue about the second one. Anyone have any ideas about this or replaced one of these chargers with a generic?

Hi phiber...

The nx7010 (solid lappie that by the way) needs an input of 100-240V-1.7A 50-60hz and output of 18.5V 3.5A - 65W charger. Part number N18197.

If by generic you mean the universal things like this;

http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?products_id=25690

then you will have no problem.... one of the above should work for both of them.
I am using one on an nx7010 and another on an Acer with similar requirements to the DV6600 and no problems thus far for over a year.

Hope this helps!

HP Brand name 90W PSU should only cost R400-R500. But because people in need of them are usually desperate, stores make 100%-200% margins on them. Shop around

The problem is that generic might not charge the batteries. The brand name PSU's output a digital signal to the laptop informing it to charge the battery.

ALWAYS check if the generic will charge the battery. Its best to get a PSU with the highest rating. ie a 60W generic wont work on a 90W notebook.

a good quality 100W generic will cost you about R500

so if i get a 100w, and plug it into a laptop that needs a 60 or 90, will it cook it? I know watt is a max thing, but i am scared to blow the batteries on these laptops. kilobitsperyear, i bought a netgear router from sybaritic and they shipped it with a lian long generic AC Adapter, and about after 6 months of use, that adapter gave off a horrible burning smell. It also felt really cheap, so if i do get a universal one, i might stay away from that one. Sapphiron, can you let me know where to find it for 400-500? Tried the HP stores and incredible and the quotes i am getting are ridiculous. Going to try a supplier tomorrow, see if they can quote me a decent price.

hi phiber...

Pity you had a prob with sybaritic before. I am lucky, I have two and no probs for a year with either of them or my batteries. My nx7010 is nearly 6 years old and the battery still lasts about an hour-ish with wifi on. The Acer still lasts around 4 hour battery life... so the Universal psu's are working OK.

The 100w thing is not a prob... it will only draw what it needs from it. I have used a 90w charger on a 60w required notebook, no harm was done.

The voltage and output A is important. As long as they put out within the limits, you will be OK.

I was quoted R890 for an original HP charger.

Here is a Mecer Universal one...

No, it won't cook it. It will draw the power it needs, provided you match the voltage.

Could you tell me what the model number on the chargers are? I don't see anything for the NX7010, but maybe they are not listing all the supported laptop for each charger.

Hi Friends
I read your thread. The two laptop power supply different because different model of laptop's battery charge to different voltage. So please contact your customer service centre. They are solve out this problem...
thank you...

That is the very reason I suggested (and have purchased) the Universal Laptop chargers. Not only is the voltage output variable, but it also came with 8 interchangeable "tips" that can be used on a whole range of notebooks.
I sometimes forget my ThinkPad charger at home, but I simply exchange the HP's tip with the ThinkPad tip, and I have no problem here either. It just works.

It is really easy, check the voltage, set the voltage slider on the side, pop on the correct laptop power connector and I am A for away.

I purchased 2 Universal Laptop chargers for the cost of 1 HP charger. I have been using them for a year and I have no problems with them, the laptops, or the batteries charging or holding charge.

Thank you all for your input. Kilobitsperyear, i the NX7010 is quite a bad laptop, the touch pad gave in after a year and a half. The laptop has just been sitting for over a year gathering dust, so I decided to get it a power brick. This is actually the 3rd and 4th HP power bricks that I have had to buy. Is their build quaility just bad, or are all power bricks like this?

phiber try these peeps - http://www.laptopaccessories.co.za/

they provide oem models for the power adapters.

Thanks iDOL, they are very cheap and they have machine specific bricks. Might end up going with them, just popped them a mail. I prefer these bricks, as if someelse uses the laptop and takes the power brick, they won't be able to change the settings on it (increase amps) and break something.

Thanks again everyone!

Haha... I actually found the nx7010 quite an awsome notebook! LOL.

I still have one that I purchased 6 years ago... it has been in use everyday and is still going strong with original everything (except RAM and HDD upgraded)... cannot believe I paid R15,900.00 then! The docking station cost R4,000 - and it too is still perfectly functional.

I have another that is nearly 5 years old, it too is going strong, but had the motherboard replaced just before the years warranty expired. No problems.

Another 2 in use still by various friends and family members... only suffering HDD failure and faulty RAM... but all still with original chargers and batteries.

I just regret not getting the higher resolution screens on mine... 1280x800 a bit of an issue, but dual monitor on dock is OK.

So... perhaps I am just lucky ;) but I am always looking out for 2nd hand nx7010's... I still have quite a bit of faith in these machines!

Can buy mines ;)

I actually had to have the onboard gfx replaced as well, about 2 years ago... Man this laptop has just been trouble :P Want to install ubuntu on it once i get a power adapter and then possibly upgrade the 256mb ram to a gig.

heheh phiber....

what screen resolution is it? what price you have in mind? If not booting (no psu) lemme know the model number underneath...

* grins *

256MB RAM ... you are abusing it man... shame... really... :)
