My company bought new HP Probook i7 in August, and i have not been able to use it since.

Since i work in Visual studio almost exclusively, I could see problems immediately showing up in VS. VS would just randomly restart.
I then started to notice it in VS Code as well, but not working with VS Code alot, I did not fully pay attention to crashes on there.

Then windows itself went buggy. Opening the battery management, that would just freeze and not show any option.
Eventually windows itself crashed. Funny though, saw a black screen instead of blue screen.

Decided to reinstall windows 11, and from recovery option said re-install from cloud.
I reinstalled VS. Nothing else.

Made sure all updates, and with just this barebones laptop, I ran VS with one of the builtin my first app MVC razor templates.
While not touching the laptop , app ran for about 1 hr, then VS would just restart.

Bearing in mind I run VS on a spare Probook i5 now with WIndows 11, and my previous i7 with windows 10 no problems.

It's been a back and forth testing this and that with HP support via email.

Eventually called the JHB number on HP site. It sounded like very dodgy operation. Lady answering phone took description of error, my existing ticket number and promised to call me back. That was more than month ago.

I got hold of CT support number , which was answered by indian call center agent, and the back and forth troubleshooting started all over again. Even asking me for a video of the crash. Which I provided.

I'm so gatvol of this laptop already. I just want to take it to HP and they can test it to their hearts content.
But it seems they would rather have run this diagnostic , then that one. ASking me if I moved the laptop when crash occurs.
All the test pass, even BIOS extensive test, but VS keeps crashing.

Can anybody please guide me how to get HP to have a look at this demonic thing? Clearly this thing is possessed.

Best to take it in an authorized repair centre for HP. Their service is not great, but since HP pays them for in-warranty repairs, they will do a proper job of troubleshooting it to get their money.

My guess, is the laptop has faulty RAM and the built-in tests are simply not intensive enough to detect it.

But before you do that you may want to do a DISM and SFC repair. https://pureinfotech.com/windows-11-repair-installation-dism-sfc/

You may just be dealing with a bad .NET if only Visual Studio is giving problems.

I bought the laptop with extra ram, and at first i thought it was ram that was the prblem. It was luckily two different brands of RAM, so it removed the compatibility issues with a certain brand.

I ran laptop with only one RAM stick in place at a time, and same VS crashing

Then HP sent me a new SSD , hoping that the issue, but did not.

Just ran the DISM, and SFC, and both passed.

And you guessed it... problem still there. Even without running the website in VS, just VS sitting idle, it just randomly restarted.

Although VS is giving the problem, I think it's just because i can consistently see the problem there.
I have seen the error in windows itself as well.. with system crashes / freezing before the latest re-install.
I have not seen system crashes on latest re-install, but then again, I'm not touching the laptop. I'm just letting VS run on it's own and crashing.

My company has been buying a few HP laptop's recently and a lot of them have been very problematic. The one i have has been okay but if it broke i wouldn't be sad. I get random popping noises from the speakers sometimes... We had a range of them that just randomly turned WiFi off and they don't have ethernet ports. Returned i think like 3 or 4 of them all for this same WiFi issue. We reinstalled Windows and all and same thing just kept happening, then another's trackpad just refused to work.

They just kak laptops

If thatbdoes not work

To disable it (for troubleshooting): If you experience rendering issues like blank windows or glitches, you can disable GPU acceleration.
Open the Command Palette (Ctrl+Shift+P or Cmd+Shift+P).
Run the command Preferences: Configure Runtime Arguments.
In the argv.json file that opens, add the line "disable-hardware-acceleration": true.
Restart VS Co
de.

@kolaval

I have tried that option in previous restore attempts. GPT suggested rather install drivers driver direct from Intel, not HP, which i did. but to no avail.

I have also tried disabling hardware acceleration, but normally just disabled it via Tools->Options.
No help there either.

ANother app that has been giving me grief is Docker Desktop on this laptop.
On previous restore attempts , I installed DOcker, and it just sat there on load screen. I could not even use the Quit option from the app tray menu.
Multiple settings and re-install of Docker did not help. Only a re-install on windows, and then install Docker worked.

Now again, tried on a fairly fresh install of windows, loading DOcker again... and again stuck on Docker loading.

All the while I have used the Settings-> System->REcovery option->Cloud REcovery. THinking maybe this pulls HP image?
SO now I'm going to do vanilla windows installation via USB and see how it goes.

Install HP Support Assistance, install all available updates from HP Support Assistant, restart and then run the full diagnostic suite.

Honestly get a Dell . I have been complaining about slow BIOS start up , takes close to a minute just to get passed the BIOS

I see the problems

Vs code
Windows 11
Razor

Check if the BIOS is up to date, reinstall windows from an ISO, not cloud/recovery.

Find a hole, like a deep hole. Very very deep hole... At least 2km deep mineshaft deep hole. Drag and drop. Problem solved...

Have you tried Win 10 on this particular Notebook ?

I think this is actually a hardware fault but might be related to Win 11 features.
My previous laptop actually had a problem where it would just randomly crash doing certain things.
It ended up being the TPM chip., which Windows 11 relies on heavily.

Funny thing is that when work replaced my laptop (it was old and wasn't viable to replace the MB) I ended up buying it for next to nothing and it works perfectly on the older OS and Ubuntu.

Back to your device.
Given that this is a laptop and most likely there is a hardware problem, it's going to mean that they replace the motherboard.
Best get it to one of those HP service agents before the warranty ends

I don't touch HP products any more.

Last HP laptop I had would boot up at random times of the night, eventually after an insane amount of troubleshooting I just removed the battery before putting it my backpack.

Early last year I bought a Lenovo and my husband shortly therafter an HP. He returned his after three painfull weeks. He was in a hurry and also bought a Lenovo.

Dell is much the sameness, I have to log warranty stuff for both regularly enough. At least HP Support Assistant is quick and easy to install VS that POS Dell SupportAssist. HP website is also better than Dell for getting part nrs and such for out of warranty components.

I've experienced that with multiple machines. They'll boot for no reason, roasting themselves in the bag.
