HP Laptop possessed

Have you tried Win 10 on this particular Notebook ?

I think this is actually a hardware fault but might be related to Win 11 features.
My previous laptop actually had a problem where it would just randomly crash doing certain things.
It ended up being the TPM chip., which Windows 11 relies on heavily.

Funny thing is that when work replaced my laptop (it was old and wasn't viable to replace the MB) I ended up buying it for next to nothing and it works perfectly on the older OS and Ubuntu.

Back to your device.
Given that this is a laptop and most likely there is a hardware problem, it's going to mean that they replace the motherboard.
Best get it to one of those HP service agents before the warranty ends
Maybe he can try running Ubuntu from a stick for a few hours, see if the same occurs.
Just download and run vs code portable version.

That'll cut out the windows question.

So i loaded vanilla Windows 11 22H2. thinking older version migh work but the problem persist with Visual Studio

So I'm in the process of reloading laptop again, with the HP windows version from cloud.
In preparation to hopefully take to their service center.

However, I see this message, as i have before , about configuration change to TPM.With a warning about erasing some data. I'm not sure what data it's set to erase , so i normally reject the config change.

But now i'm thinking , based on Nerfherder comment, maybe I should be resetting it?

Definitely have a look at it, do a bit of research but I can tell you what that message probably means.
If you use bitlocker, the encryption keys are stored in the TMP. So if you wipe the TMP then you lose the ability to recover data from that drive.
In your case its most likely meaningless as you are wiping the drive anyway. I *think* thats the main concern but check it out for yourself.

In my case the IT tech at work (I have a computer science degree but we outsource our laptop support) tried updating the TMP. I don't know enough about it to know what that entails but looks like it has its own firmware\BIOS that can be updated.
The update failed several times - which was why they just abandoned trying to fix it. The indication was that there was a fault on the component.

If you are unsure then let the guys at the service centre do it.

Some good news.

I don't have bitlocker installed, but maybe HP does by default, so i just left TMP as is.

After the re-install from cloud again, I updated the BIOS, on it's own, after the HP diagnostics software did not pickup a need to update.

I also updated / installed a whole bunch of optional service packs that HP diagnostics software recommended.

And there Visual Studio stable. Left it running over night, and this morning still running.

This is running version of Windows 11 23H2. Previous attempts was on 22/24/25. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Just for my own info, I'm going to reset again :).

Then try VS again with just the basic Wndows on the updated BIOS. Then we can attribute the problems to BIOS.
If not, then i will re-add the additional service packs, to see if that helped.
And eventually update to 25H2

Maybe tempting fate, but I would like to get to bottom of the problem.
