Hi,

I have a microserver here that I want to use as a basic fileserver.

Just share a couple of folders, dvd drive etc. Some with passwords, some without.

On read/write virus scanning would be good.

Also want to have it do it's own thing (updates, virus definitions etc).

And backing up to a network drive would also be a bonus (although I could backup the basics from the shares).

Windows, linux and if possible dos will the the os's accessing it.

Any suggestions for os?

Hoping to go 100% open source and free...

Currently using an old ubuntu desktop with nothing but clamav installed and it's working ok.

Before that it was a windows 98 machine...

ClearOS is 100% open source and mostly free. You pay for some modules but the majority of the system is free. Especially the bits that you want.

I'll download it and give it a bash :) No rush so I can always stick something else on if I am not happy.

Thank you for the option.

Unraid works for me as a basic file server.
Don't have antivirus on it, but have nod on all the other machines.

Freenas seems to be closer to what I have in mind, unraid is also paid for?

Open Media Vault also is an option, although I usually go Debian or Ubuntu, and configure the thing myself, as I went ZFS ages ago.

Does everything you need though.

I've been playing around with Xpenology (a port of the synology software) on my N40L. Works very well and basically can do everything a normal synology device does.

I'm not sure whether it is technically 100% open source, but I believe the port was possible because synology had to make the source-code available due to the licensing of some code they use (don't quote me on this).

Busy installing freenas to a microserver now (handly little usb port directly on the motherboard so usb drive will be inside the box).

I'll get back once I have tried it and may try some of the other options here at that stage as well, Thanks :)

FreeNAS is awesome, but remember, add volume formats drive :) (yes I made that mistake....)
