I'm thinking of getting an eSata cable and using it to plug an SSD into - and installing Windows/XBMC. I'll then have the 4 x bays for storage.

Think this will work?
Does eSata carry power - or do I need to get power from somewhere?

eSATA doesn't carry power as far as I know, but can't you perhaps utilize the USB port on the motherboard somehow? Like this article: http://lifehacker.com/how-to-run-a-portable-version-of-windows-from-a-usb-dri-1565509124

Although I think running Windows from a USB 2.0 flashie would be quite painful to be honest. I don't know what the Microserver motherboards have WRT ports but can you not get an adapter and mount a SSD in the optical drive bay?

I read that the optical drive bay is slow as it wasn't intended for a drive.

So maybe I could the power (that molex connector and I have a converter)from the optical and the eSata do the data from SSD?

I did this, bought a molex to sata adapter and then the esata slot for the dvd drive. It works but I think it does require a bios mod to make everything work properly.

My problem is that it uses uefi secure boot and I'm having some windows startup issues (not sure if the iso I'm using via a flash drive is the issue). I may just move the ssd to one of the bays but the adapter plate I got with the ssd doesn't line up the drive :(

You need to hack the bios to get full speed. The HP Proliant Microservers run the ESATA ports at half speed!

I'm running Linux on a flash disk in the internal USB connector, works well enough, although some attention to preventing disk writes is advised. Contemplating a CF disk in a SATA-CF adapter for the next installation, though. :-)

eSataP carries power. Never seen it in the wild. The HP has unpowered eSata. Another thread here has a user looking to hookup an eSatap => eSata + USB cable - I am keen to see if it works. I haven't found that cable locally yet.

Ordered the cable today. Had to import it. Will let you all know how it goes as soon as I receive and test it,:)

I have received the cable and it doesnt work on the DVD rom I have :( The port on the DVD ROM is different to the cable I received, it wont fit (must some sort of standard specific for Dell machines). Will test with a different esata device when I find one and will advise.
