So my brother just bought an HP microserver + GT610 + RAM earlier today and brought it around to my place to install.

There is no OS and the server is stock from the box - but I notice that when the card is in, there is nothing output from either the HDMI or onboard VGA. HDMI I can understand - but but doesn't onboard VGA always work?

If I pull the card out again, the onboard VGA works.

Do I need to remove the card until Windows is installed and use the onboard VGA?

Check the Bios.

Sounds like the external display option is wrong.

Should HDMI on the card work before an OS/drivers are installed?

Well, that's not good ...

I'll check out tonight. For the time being I removed the card, used on the onboard VGA to load Windows etc - so all seems great. I'm going to try and see if adding Windows made any difference - but judging from replies, it shouldn't

Try restoring the BIOS to defaults while the card is in. Make sure the monitor is plugged into the onboard VGA while doing so.

I think this is a problem. As long as the card is in, the onboard don't work either ..

but I notice that when the card is in, there is nothing output from either the HDMI or onboard VGA.

Also, I don't think the microserver makes any beep sounds. I've never heard mine complain :) Could be wrong tho'

Thing is nothing appears on the screen when the card is in - so surely if BIOS pops up, I won't even see it ?

I have the same problem, although mine worked right from the start. Displayed BIOS etc. But now my card seems to be dead and to be able to use the onboard VGA, I needed to removed the card completely.

Have you got another PC where you can try the card in ?

Since I think that you did everything already possibly, try plugging the monitor in when you have a “green light” on POST.

Had a custom build SuperMicro server a while ago which did this, unplugged the monitor, switched the power on and everything went go, eventually had to switch monitors.

Otherwise it might be the mobo (or slot) even GPU which is buggered, various reasons why… needs to be tested.
