Hi,

Can anyone recommend a reasonable (not excessive) UPS to use with a HP N54L running ubuntu and 4xHDD's? I would probably also pop on the router too as its plugged in right there

I had a power trip yesterday... and it scared the crap out of me, so i think the UPS is a must have now...

I would ideally like the machine to stay on for say 3-4hrs and then auto shutdown.. but the 3-4hrs may be too expensive..

Thanks

A budget UPS will get you like 15-30 mins, not 3-4 hrs.

Personally I don't see the point though - a good UPS will cost more than the HP server.

See now - i didn't know that thanks... i did see something about certain UPS's could cause issues with the powersupply in the machine too

Cool man.

For your usage case you can get "decent" protection for like 900 bucks - but as I said I'd be more inclined to take a chance. See 500VA one here - which should be enough for a HP server

Really depends on what exactly you want. You can get a 900 bucks line interactive one or a 8k online one. Both APC which is considered a good brand.

UPS tend to output Square Wave when running on batteries instead of Sine Wave - some tech doesn't like that.

Have been using an APC Back-UPS CS 350 for a while now on a microserver with 5 HDDs. You may still be able to get an old 350VA UPS, otherwise the 500VA seems to be the entry level APC in shops at the moment. Just make sure that you get one with a USB output to shut down the computer, some of the cheaper ones do not have this.
