Hey guys

I have a HP Pavillion dv1000 and when I returned from spain the monitor stopped working. I've since discovered that it is the activator board as I tried one from a different model. Because it is considered a Grey Model, because I bought it over there, I can't seem to get spares for it.

At the moment I'm running it on a 19" LCD which works nicely, however I have lost the mobility - proving a little pointless in my situation.

Does anyone know where I can buy, swop, or repair the board? I'm even willing to swop the notebook with someone for basic one that has WLAN/WIFI.

by activator board, I suppose you mean inverter.

most inverters are an easy fix. they tend to have one of two problems

1) blown fuse - check the board for a component labelled F1 or similar...normally a little white surface mount component, take multimeter, check for continuity. rreplace if blown

2) cold solder/bad solder joints. check the coil winding looking thingy...c'mon, you know which part I mean. there are around 6 large solder joints on each side of it. Just resolder these.

Any of the above fixes can be done by an amateur, even if they have a TaG watch on.

I have checked the fuse and replaced it, twice. It keeps popping!

Checked the soldering but I personally couldn't spot anything. I had a workshop look at it too and they couldn't see any problem with it either. This is when we tested one from another model and it worked fine.

Sure you realize how frustrating this is! Having a tag just doesn't quite cut it anymore.

if the fuse keeps popping then there is a short on it, simple.

1) check the rear of the invertor, does it still have its plastic/mylar protective cover? this is vitally important. sometimes you have a blown fuse, and when replacing the fuse you lose the mylar covering, then next thing you know the fuse blows again (because the lyar is missing) and you end up going round in circles.
if the plastic/mylar is still in place, have any of the solder joints on the rear of the pcb maybe worn through and touching the back cover/metal parts on the back cover (hinge assemblies etc)?

2) if the mylar is ok, then check the little pink and white wires leaving the invertor, they tend to have to make a 90degree bend somewhere to actually get to the light...often they can wear through and touch the edge of the lcd, which normally has a metal surround=blown fuse.

the cold/bad soldering around the transformer-looking thingy isnt something you can really spot with your eye, just resolder it in anycase, you have nothing to lose, and as that is the part that converts the low frequency into high frequency it IS the part where most things go wrong.

This grey import excuse is irritating. A laptop is by definition a mobile device, are they not honouring your warranty??
I've seen Pavillions now at CNA and Hi-Fi Corp. There was a time when they were not importing them. The excuse given was that the workshops did not have the wherewithall to fix them.

My girlfriend has the same laptop, really nice! She got hers from Hong Kong. And yeah Hi-Fi corp has them. When we unpacked hers it had a card that said world wide warranty, do you not have that card?

It comes with a one year warranty. Had mine one year and 3 days when this happened. Even with the warranty though HP in PE (nearest agent) charge a R700 just to look at it. Not the type of service I was looking for.

It is a really good laptop, fact that it's got some power and is small were the reasons for selecting.

I have decided to go to a friends workshop tomorrow and strip it down again, check everything again.
