HP ProLiant MicroServer

But the funny thing is even did the same thing on the stable 3.0.0 releases. I'm starting to think that the N40L wasn't meant for versions higher than 2.0.0...

I'm running 3 without issues.
Check you have all the hardware acceleration bits enabled?

Yeah its enabled but still keeps my CPU flying in the mid 34% to 65% range even when idle.. It's making me go crazy :P

Mmm, my cpu is also high but I don't see any real ill effects from it.

Try checking/ changing skins. Had similar problems but ended up being the skins not being 100% compatible with 3.0.* versions yet.
A bit of tweaking solved the problem.

Not so random question: What is the lowest price these babies go for these days?
PCINT R2050.00
Esquire R2164.86

Anyway to speed this baby up? Thanks...
Install Windows.

Not trolling for a change but the microserver works great with Win 7 or 8. No config errors or sound that doesn't work or crashes.

R1,750.00 at Cybernatic

Missed that one, thx, glad that I sourced a few at Esquire when they were still going for 1399/1594 then.

My batch of (possibly a few too many) brand new N54L's is landing on my stoep next week ... setting one up as a HTPC and looking forward to re-reading all 4687 posts in this thread to refresh my memory regarding what to do and what (not) to get, HDMI-wise at least. :D

Anyone that still wants one at the R1399/1594 price point gimme a shout before I find homes/jobs for the leftover children...

* RECOMMENDED * Online ROM Flash Component for Windows - VB0250EAVER Drives

Upgrade Requirement:
Recommended - HP recommends users update to this version at their earliest convenience.

If you have a N36L or possibly N40L running Windows Server with the original HP 250GB drive, please do me a favour and check if this firmware update at least finds your drive. You don't have to upgrade...

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=za&prodTypeId=329290&prodSeriesId=3690351&swItem=MTX-3a8fe4285079462f9e38690db8&prodNameId=4134173&swEnvOID=1005&swLang=13&taskId=135&mode=4&idx=1

It's applicable only to VB0250EAVER drive models running a supported version of Windows Server. To check your drive model, go to Device Manager > Disk Drives to see if you have the VB0250EAVER drive. (Or right click the drive in Explorer and choose Properties and then the Hardware tab.)

Please let me know if the update finds your drive!

Quick one:

What is the latest recommended graphics card advised for this box to run XBMC? I assume there still is a power limitation on the slot?

Feedback for the Linux crowd.

I have a tiny N37L - best buy ever. Upon getting it, I recycled the memory and 250GB disk to a PC. I put in 2 x 2GB DD3 1333 PC memory (non-EC) and 4 x 500GB Western Digital disks.

After playing with it a bit messing with FreeNAS (driver issues with newer releases, older works great) and OpenFiler, I set out installing it as intended.

I installed ProxMox VE, a version of Debian that allows for visualization - http://www.proxmox.com/
I hate hardware RAID, I chose to use the disks separately and use software RAID1 (sorry HW RAID lovers, I have plenty of scars)

Upon it I spun up a few Ubuntu VM's for testing/dev/QA and infrastructure (Samba file server, Squid proxy, DNS to workshop systems, Apt cacher etc)

I checked the BIOS to not halt on KBD errors and removed the screen and keyboard. Since then it's been running headless. Works a charm except when the power fails (I know, I have a 2KVA UPS I must still install). However a press of the power button, and a few minutes later I'm back in business.

I've spun up/destroyed Windows and Solaris X86 environments in KVM as well from time to time, however Windows is a hog.

The server is totally quiet, only the blue HP logo to show it's actually running. It's stashed into a forget-me corner.

Best buy for a PC, originally at R1,000 when they first came out.

At this stage I either need to get bigger disks, or another for a workshop area where repairs etc are done. I'm contemplating the latter. From time to time they are on specials, I just missed the last one.

Does anybody have any old second hand microservers lying around? Specifically the N36L.

I'll take it off your hands :) Please let me know.

Any recommendations for a remote for mine running XBMC? I've seen people touch on what they use in this thread, but there doesnt seem to be any consensus on the best option.

Flirc. I have the Logitech 700. Flirc is best, but can be used with that as well, if you have multiple devices. Eventually sold the 700.

Yatse if you have a Android phone/tab.

This is what I am currently using. Got an old Galaxy Ace that I rooted and uninstalled everything that is not needed. Only down side is I have to charge it every few days.
