HP ProLiant MicroServer

Is anyone using 2x8 or 1x16 non-ECC RAM?

There is a decent list of working RAM here, but not everything is always available locally.

you cant mix the stock ECC ram with the NON-ECC ram, Esquire you are looking for trouble buy supplying units in that way. Expect allot of BSOD when mixing the two together. You either run ECC ram or non ECC ram. Do not mix the two!

I am running 2x4gig non-ecc Kingston ram.
The main thing is your ram needs to able to run at 800mhz. If the ram is unable to clock down to 800mhz then don't expect it to work.
The wiki n40L is a very good guide what you can and cannot buy.
Make sure you get the model specific listed on the wiki page , otherwise you might end up buying ram you cannot use.

I want to build a vm host, so the more RAM the better. Kingston is generally available so will see if there something I can source locally that's tested.

Like I said make sure you get the model specific listed ram listed on the wiki page, that's what I did and it works perfectly.
I have had trouble with other ram, including the Axtrom and Apacer ram.

I've been running stock 1GB ECC + 4GB Non-ECC for 3 years now without a single crash

How well would this microserver function as a "low end desktop" with 4gb RAM and the nvidia 210 graphics card?
Im thinking of buying it for my kid who loves to play on our laptops now that our old desktop is dead. Mainly for playing simple games and apps like scratch or youtube videos.

Yay or nay?

Roux will tell you but I will add my 2c.

I have a PC which my daughter has hijacked and uses for her games. I have it purely for testing purposes. I installed Windoze onto a partition on my HP N54L and it runs quite smoothly for my purposes - which mostly would be testing websites and the odd PC-specific task. I am sure scratch would be fine on that too. Runs Office 365 too without hiccup.

The 2 I have ordered now will be running XP or Windows 7 and Office. Add in some web browsing and I am sure it will more than handle life in our office environment with the standard innards.

Awesome - thanks for the responses!
Was debating getting one of these vs building a custom pc, but this seems like the quicker/cheaper option for now that should be adequate.

So phoned Esquire Samrand just now, they only receiving stock on Monday. :o?

Probably all allocated though. PE will only get their stock on Wed / Thurs am and I have purchased 2 of their pending units.

wrong information given to you , the stock in coming out of the bonded warehouse as I type this post , we getting some to fulfil Midrand orders , if you placed your order Online last night you will get your items today as soon as it out of the warehouse and also tomorrow morning , I have been on this the whole day

I just received an e-mail saying that stock would only be available Monday afternoon. Esquire, is there anyway to confirm whether I can collect my order tomorrow from your shop (and more importantly whether there is still stock available - I ordered late this morning?)
