HP ProLiant MicroServer

Thanks for correcting me. :) Otherwise I may have put it in the order form.

I could probably live with a lot less than 4GB as well, but I figured I'd just get the biggest stick size, in case I want to do something with it later, so as not to limit the expandability. I'm a Java dev: we invented the phrase "RAM is cheap". Best I put my money where my mouth is.

Darn - new models - I just bought the 1.3 processor with 1 Gb RAM... Still its faster than the old laptop its replaced and I got it for R1138 incl VAT so still not a terrible deal...

For your NAS I'd go with 8GB RAM... if you look at the FreeNAS 8 Requirements it needs more RAM.. it's quite cheap so I suggest you get 2x 4GB sticks...

I have the same setup

8GB RAM
4x 2TB HDD's
FreeNAS 8 on a FlashDrive

Using ZFS with RAID-z... (single drive redundancy)... Total usable space is about 5.2TB

Me too got mine for R1038, still waiting for it to be delivered. On a side note I ordered 2 of these drives "Seagate Barracuda ST2000DL003 Green 2TB SATA3 5900rpm", drives or going up by the day, yesterday when I checked it was going for R1180.00 incl vat, today R1608.00 :wtf:. I managed to get it for R1024.86 :), so are they any good?

It will be used for the nas im planning to build when my HP arrives.

Any links for 4x2 ram sticks?

Woot! my server was delivered an hour ago, I would like to upgrade the ram to 4gigs (2x2) what ram would suffice as the wiki states 800Mhz which dont sound right. "PC3-10600E unbuffered DDR3 ECC (800MHz), 2 slots "

why not build it yourself? that's where all the fun lies man!

all you need to do is to lay CAT 5 cables, and connect it to a hub and the HP....

Agree with Keeper on that one. It's simple enough, besides lots of free help here if you get stuck, plus loads of self satisfaction in the end when you nail it.

You can google this stock/model number..

KVR1333D3N9/4G

KINGSTON ValueRam 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 DIMM Desktop Memory Module , Warranty 3YR

I see this is non ecc will it be fine for Hp Microserver?

Yes, it is supposed to be non ecc, and it works fine. It must just be the standard height, the taller modules will not fit, but that Kingston is good.

I see Esquire have these on special tomorrow - under R200. Although I don't need more RAM for what I'm using my HPMS for, I thought I'd share this with everyone who'se been so helpful on this thread! :-)

I also just came accros that special but its cool, mine is coming with my hardrives i ordered from prophecy so im scoring on the delivery at least:)

Anybody know if the new model is available yet? I see the HP shop still has the old model.

I'm using an external USB sound adapter, brilliant little thing, works out the box in linux.

http://www.vantecusa.com/en/product/view_detail/439

R288 from Sybaritic

Code:
Simple USB 2.0 Connection (Backwards Compatible w/ USB 1.1)
7.1 Channel Surround Sound
Full-Duplex Playback/Record
Support 48/44.1 KHz Sampling Rates For Both Playbacks and Recordings
SPDIF Optical Digital Input And Output
Line-In Input For Direct Recordings
Separate Left And Right Microphone Inputs For True Stereo Recordings
3.5mm Jack For Your Headphones

I tried looking, but could not see on the specs whether it supports 7.1 channels via 3.5mm audio plugs. I need something like this for a friend but he has a normal 5.1 pc speaker system which connects via 3 audio plugs. Will this works?

I saw a lot of usb sound adapters on the web which states 5.1 or 7.1, but only has 1 earphone/speaker and 1 microphone jacks. Thus it will probably down mix. But this is not what he wants.

EDIT: Never mind. I saw that it actually have the correct jacks. Thanks.

I'm having a problem with my MicroServer. I have Windows 7 installed, same as all the other computers on my home network.
I have 5 desktop computers and two laptops in the Windows Homegroup.
Now the MicroServer can see the Home Group and it becomes part of the Homegroup, but when I go to view any of the other resources on the other computers, it says it does not have permission to view those resources.
All of my other computers can see each other and they can see what is on the MicroServer. But the MicroServer refuses to "see out".
I treid re-creating the Home Group. I have made a new Home Group. I tried starting the Home Group on the Micro Server first, and then adding the others. but no joy.
The network has gigabit switches and appropriate cabling. I've tried moving some of the switches around and swapping them out.
Still no luck. I have also tried turning off password sharing on all the PC's, but still with no success.
What could be preventing the MicroServer from seeing out onto the network?
