HP ProLiant MicroServer

Just when I thought I could spend my new-years weekend setting my server again I had to give it to my wife as her work PC blew-up. So I've decided to rather get a new one to act just as a server and then stream it to my PS3.

Wonder what the going rate is for a barely used (about 10 hours) Radeon 5450 card is?

EDIT: Damn this server works perfect for my wife. It running 1440x900 onboard, 1Gb RAM, loaded XFCE (Debian) and she is running a LAPP, smstools server and a couple of very large spreadsheets.

Yet another satisifed customer :)

I am building a HTPC using a HP Microserver. Got 8GM RAM, MSI GT520 graphics card, Samsung Blu Ray writer and 3 x 2TB Seagate HDDs to install in it.

I want to use Openelec and XBMC. Will I be able to run SABnzb and Sickbeard on the same machine with Openelec?

I am using OpenelecPVR which is the same as Openelec just with some TV drivers included.

I am also using SABnbzd and Sickbeard and CoachPotato on the same machine as well and it works *almost* perfectly. I had the machine hang twice while unraring some huge (10gig+) files. Otherwise it runs smoothly. I am not sure if it is because of the filesize or what exactly caused the hang.

Thanks. I am on leave next week so I will be building my HTPC and installing Openelec on it.:)

I wish I could install openelec on mine, but I've got a 5450.

I installed it on a buddy's MS and it boots SO much quicker than my Ubuntu + XBMC setup.

I have openelec on mine. Considering going back to ubuntu mainly for the wake on lan but also because I created some links so the file structure was the same as what it was when I was on ubuntu and it just loses those when I reset. I guess maybe I should put the commands in a script somewhere. Also still has some sound issues on the latest openelec and ubuntu was fine. I might just remove a bunch of stuff from ubuntu and then set xbmc as the shell.

OpenELEC should work, I also have a 5450 in my HTPC and it works 100%.

I think I'm using the Generic Build, I'll have to check the exact version number tonight..

Why don't you use "library mode" .. from the main menu, go left and select library mode..

You wont have to worry about the file structure, xbmc will handle that part... Everything will be sorted by title, year, genre etc

My library is a bit of a mess now. On ubuntu my files were all in something like /media/second2tb. Now openelec uses the disk label so its now something like "/media/Movies Drive" or something. I obviously did the wrong option hoping it would pick up that the same files are there but moved and now my library has duplicates of everything. The ones pointing to the wrong path have the right watched indicators and the ones pointing to the right path don't have them. I haven't touched anything because I don't want to lose them. So yeah if I go back to ubuntu I can install the necessary utils to allow me to edit the database directly then I'll sort it out properly, and I can mount my drives wherever. Unfortunately the 2tb movies drive is basically full, and ntfs and I don't have the space to move everything while I convert to ext3 or something. I tried changing the drive label in openelec but didn't have much luck. I suppose I could run a live os of some sort and do it from there or something, worst case put the drive into a windows pc and do it there.

I have set up symlinks to my various series and movies folders in my home folder. So, I store my movies/series on multiple drives and symlink to them from a dedicated XBMC media folder in my home folder. I then point XBMC to the XBMC media folder. If I need to move series between folders, all I need to do is update the symlink. I also have scripts to automatically create new symlinks for any new series/movies I get. It works quite well.

I tried a few months ago, but only Nvidia cards were supported. I didn't realise AMD cards are now supported too. I should have another look at it.

Makes sense but I don't quite need to put stuff on other drives quite yet. Maybe I should set it up like that though because it will be easier when I do. I made symlinks in openelec so the files would be available at the location they are in the db but when I rebooted they were gone :(

Has anybody tried the XFX HD 6450 fanless 1 GB DDR3 in their N36L or N40L. The price is a non issue as I can get free shipping and a one time $20 off $40 at Newegg for a final cost of $10 after rebate.

From other threads, it appears to run cool and be reliable compared to some other HD 6450 cards. It comes with the LP bracket. One of the Newegg reviews and mentions in some other threads say it fits even with the large heatsink.

One mention seemed to imply that it might render the x1 PCIe slot unusable and I'd like to be able to use that slot for an eSATA with port multiplier in the future.

I'm running Server 2008 R2 and plan on staying with at least some flavor of Windows.

I've also read conflicting reports of whether I can add a non ECC 2GB stick to the stock ECC 2GB. I've read that it works and also that both sticks have to be the same type.

Thanks in advance for anybody who might be kind enough to help from a new 40L owner and forum newbie!

Newegg doen't ship to South Africa (ZA).. You'll have to use a forwarding company which will add to the costs..

guys will this card work/fit in the HP MS
GIGABYTE NVIDIA GT430

Fit probably, but it has a TDP of 49w so I'd go for something a little closer to the max of the 25w that the PCI-E port delivers. e.g.- GT520, GT210, ATI 5450, 6450

Thanks saw post from JVZ saying that the HP MS can supply power to it but that probably means de-modding the gfx ?

Nvidia: GT520 - best performing NVidia card that fits within the HP MS power limitations.
Radeon: 6450 - ditto but only if you feel like playing with drivers or will be running Windows.

Any other dedicated HTPC using XBMC (i.e. not on the HP MS): Nvidia GT430. It's tweaked for video playback but requires more power the HP MS can supply.

Think you misunderstand what he means.

The GT430 is tweaked for post processing of videos for use in an HTPC but requires more power than the HP MS can supply

jannievanzyl has a GT520 (or 2) if I'm not mistaken
