HP ProLiant MicroServer

will this be a better option than the gt520?

I really have no idea about these things. I googled graphics card + proliant microserver, and most forumites were recommending the Sapphire HD5450.

I prefer NVIDIA in general. So I'll look into it.

neither do I, hence my question lol
it was the one recommended in keepers thread

the gt520 wont fit in the N40l due to the size of the heatsink....the silent one ofcourse with no fan

Are there any Nvidia cards that will fit?

I've read elsewhere that the fanless 520 is an issue. But the model with a fan will fit.

As far as I know the GT520 has better support (linux), is faster and has better post-processing capabilities.

Other cards often used GT210, HD 6450

Most of the Nvidia fanless designs have huge heat sinks which don't fit in the HP MS.
The one's with fans generally fit.

Some do some don't, generally it is indicated on the box if it does.

This Sapphire one from wootware certainly does.

Best to check with the store first though.

The one in my edited link definitely does as I have the box in my grubby paws right now, it has a sticker on the box indicating so, but as stated, ask the store to check and insist.

I have a spare set from a mate who used another in a normal PC if anyone is desperate.

So its between the

Nvidia GT520 with Fan
OR
HD5450 with heat sink

I plan to run XBMCbuntu on this, so I'm a bit reluctant to go with the ATI even though its cheaper and fanless.

Will the unit will be able to handle live stream to a Western digital live and other pc's/laptops on the network? All types of media mostly video. Basically watching a movie over the network without needing to copy it to the device being used?

I have a HD5450 in my MS. I initially installed Ubuntu + XBMC. It was a b!tch getting that to work, but I did it in the end (first time I've ever used Linux).

I recently installed openelec instead and this works out of the box. It is fantastic! It also only takes a few minutes to install. You shouldn't have any issues with openelec, even if you go with ATI.

That settles it. Thanks.

I shouldn't be buying this anyway, so every rand counts.

Yes. I actually have a p4 with xbmc and ati. No linux experience, but xbmc live was super easy to setup. Had an issue with the syntax for network shares that took me forever to get right. Also setting up static ip.

Get the Nvidia if you're going linux ... and to make things even easier, try OpenElec ... I have the GT520 on my OpenElec MicroServer
