HP ProLiant MicroServer

I have 2 externals plugged into my microserver. Both drives are mapped as network drives on my laptops (windows). On rebooting the microserver the name of one external changes from Freecom to disk_. If I unplug the drive and plug it back in the name is once again Freecom.

Is there anyway around this?

How to use XBMC Live as a NAS

How to use XBMC Live as a NAS.

Guide starts at installation of the media center through to setting up samba and then applying scripts for automation.

Don't know enough to know if this is a good solution. I currently just map the xbmc drives on my windows machines.

this is what I do, but sometimes the Drives swap "drive letters" and xbmc can't find the files anymore, until i unmount my windows drive and remount it..

any advice?

I don't know much especially about Linux.

If you're using windows you can reserve drive letters in disk management.

I've built an Ubuntu + XBMC image that should be able to be restored onto any 8gb flashdisk and will boot and run XBMC off the bat, all drivers for nvidia included, HDMI Audio out fixed, video optimized, and video tearing fixed.

I'm busy compressing it ( Should come down to ~1gb ), and will upload it somewhere tomorrow morning.

Anyone interested in helping me out by pointing out some bugs and such, I'd appreciate a PM.

( This should also work on a PC running an Nvidia graphics card )

would be super stoked to see one of these

Any of you guys have a Blu-ray drive installed? Thinking of getting this: http://www.takealot.com/electronics/pc-components-1111/liteon-blu-ray-reader-combo-drive,10800599

What OS are you running? If you are running windows, then go ahead, but if running linux, then wait a bit.

I have a Bly-ray drive, but I am running Openelec. Currently, it is not able to play Blu-ray discs (unless you do some tricks behind the scenes), but it is the top priority at the moment for Openelec, to get this working.

Yeah I'm running Windows 7!

Love your affection for the old school :p ;)
:D Hehe You're right. I am still staggered by the capacity and cheapness of today's drives. And yes, I am Olde Schoole. I remember personally delivering the first-in-the-world 1GB 3.5-inch SCSI HDD to the DP Centre of a bank in Marshalltown in 1989, for their IBM PS/2 Model 80 server. It cost them R13 000 in then's money!

As to what OS for the N40L? I fiddled with the first WHS some years ago, and then abandoned it mainly because I image all my systems with Acronis and I'm still olde schoole enough to want full control over the data and disks. So maybe I'll go with Server 2008 R2. Some things are hard to unlearn.

Taken the plunge and ordered an N40L from HPShop. 2 x 3GB Seagates, 8GB RAM and a Sapphire HD6450 also ordered. Now to decide on OS ...

assuming you got 2 x 3TB, i'm so jealous!
I should have done that....4TB more per HP.

I've got 4x2TB and an external 2TB..... my bays are full so not too sure where to go from here :D

Another HP? Or should I just buy external Drives and use USB?

You're a good man, akescpt ... sacrificing yourself for wife and kids. That makes you a Real man in my eyes. Our job is to be a chequebook and general maintenance factotum for 20-30 years ... and then when you're worn out and fat and bald you can play with entry-level tech. ;)

I have the t-shirt and the scars.

Appreciate that! :) have had my eye on the hp for a while. Will be playing around with some old hardware at home for now. But you enjoy that hp. Sounds like an awesome setup.
