HP ProLiant MicroServer

Hi

I need some expert advise. I just bought the Proliant N54L from Esquire. (comes with 2GB ram)

I want to use it as a HTPC, so got a NVidia GeForce 210. When I checked the box it said 300W PSU minimum and the Proliant only has a 150W PSU. Somewhere else in this thread somebody said that that is fine.

My question is, how can this be? Are they lying on the box? Or do they assume that the rest of the system that this card would go into would be more power hungry than the Proliant is?

I put in a nice 4TB drive, but didn't go green... just in case this affects the requirements.

Second less pressing question is: will I get away with the 2GB Ram? I am looking at going Linux for this.

I am sorry if this is a dim question or if it has been answered elsewhere.

I have a 520 and 4 3TB drives, non green, no problem.

My openelec uses on average 200mb of ram. Peaks at 500

when i asked about the graphics card i wondered the exact same thing. After reassurance i got it. Energy consumption on it is low so go for it

LOL thought I lost my spare key so attached huge keyring to one I am using. But found spare. Hate not having a spare!

Solved my key problem by attaching it to the security lug on the back of the chassis so that it always stays with the microserver.

Cool idea. Placed mine in plastic packet that came with server. Yours better solution :D

Tried searching this thread but no answers, where can I buy a network interface card for my microserver? I want to use it as a gateway/firewall etc

I bought an Intel expi9301CT OEM card about 2 years back from Bios Online. Works well, and came with low profile bracket.

Ok will check. Any specific search terms of sellers. Also any model numbers for network cards? I have a N54L and hoping a card will help pcs to connect to hp server.

Not just good but great price. What is epacket? Any customs etc but should be minimal.

Hopefully also protect motherboard from power surges. Replace card only and not whole motherboard.

Cool, thanks for the feedback. Going to try it this weekend. Will also have to do it over ssh as my server is headless.

Did you have to reload your apps, redo samba shares, etc. afterwards or does everything remain? I use mine as a plex server so just wondering if I'll have to set it up again from scratch after the upgrade.

Sorry for not replying earlier - got a bit caught up in life AFK. :p

The only thing I had to work on after the update was the GUI. Forgot to mention that earlier. The first time I booted it moaned about "low graphics mode", I reinstalled the desktop and it worked but moaned now about drivers, so cleaned out old fglrx and reinstalled that. Otherwise SAMBA was fine - MySQL is the only other "extra" I run (Synced XBMC) and that worked off the bat too.

Just for interest sake, I dumped Ubuntu and went to Win 8 now... The Mrs was not amused when XBMC crashed and she couldn't figure out how to get it going again :erm:

Noob question: So samba etc run on windows 8? Going to Google this as I always avoided these thinking they linux programs?
