HP ProLiant MicroServer

I had this problem with my 2 ROKU 3's. A soon as I changed the encoding setting to DIRECT PLAY the CPU calmed down on the server and full HD is delivered to my ROKU's with no buffering or jitters. Majority of my file formats on the PLEX server are mp4 and mkv.

Thanks FlashSA, Worth investigating... I will check it out and revert with my findings.

Hi Guys,

I have an NL54 running Windows 7.

I use it mostly for two main purposes (and the third now and again).
1. Downloading video content (Sickbeard Couchpotato etc.)
2. Plex media server (streaming to plex clients like iPad and Android TV box)
3. Running apps that wont work on OSX.

What Android TV box are you using?

Can it not playback the media (if shared through Samba) without having to transcode it?

I am using a MINX NEO X7.

I have quite a large library and I enjoy the library management functionality in Plex. It means that I can easily see what I have watched and what not, also it allows me to stop a video on the main tv and continue watching it on a tablet where I left off.

Plex is not perfect, but it works better than XBMC for me or direct shares.

OK. I was going to suggest trying that. For me on the other hand Samba shares to XBMC based Media Box with MySQL server works very well. Also full HD playback on Samsung Note 3 :D

Generally it works well.... However I find that it struggles with transcoding HD content for Plex. This causes choppy video playback.

Obviously this is not great and I need to find a solution. Either I have to buy an additional machine to take over the Plex role or I have to find a way to boost the transcoding of the Microserver...

The machine also has a low profile NVida HDMI card in it and I was wondering if there is a hack to offload some of the transcoding from the CPU to the GFX card?

Or any other ideas to bulk up the transcoding?

What Windows specific apps do you run? I've had Windows 7 on for like 1 day and it was too slow for me. I then installed Ubuntu but it was still to slow (this is without bios update and on a quite old SATA hard drive). Then install Lubuntu and never had any problems with slow speeds. I'm running NZBget, NZBDrone, Couchpotato, Headphones, Plex Media Server, Universal Media Server and Plex Home Theater.

I know it was discussed in this thread a while back but the search is not giving me pointers as to where so forgive me for asking.

I have ordered a WD 6TB SATA for my n54l microserver which is running Windows 7 Pro - will it be detected and work? From google results, it needs to be formatted GPT instead of MBR - will WIN7 detect and perform this format on my command and without issue?

Don't want to get a drive that is not compatible with my server.

See here maybe.....

Thanks

the 6TB will just be for storage and not booting. From my reading it looks like one needs to delete all partitions and volumes and then convert into a GPT drive within DISK MANAGEMENT.....

Oh yes... that will be fine then.
I have several 3 Tb drives in my MicroServer with GPT no problem.
Native support.

There's nothing Micro about that.

Might as well just build any old custom PC then.

Ja, I'm running three 3GB drives in one of the Microservers. Convert to GPT and all is fine. The boot drive is 250GB with dual boot Win7 and 8.1.
