HP ProLiant MicroServer

I wish...windows server 2003...it's for a client.
I am assuming the 1333Mhz ddr3 one should be fine.

Yup. Go for the 2Gb one. Those HyperX Heat sinks are not much bigger than ones without so they should fit.

****. i just called them now.
Spoke to a guy called Shaun. He said they will get stock in 2 to 3 months but the price will be a lot higher. :-/.

Good thing I just got my 2 delivered today, one from HP shop and one from Digital Planet.

Anyone encountered a media freezing issue with Win7 yet? My videos are still freezing, even after purchasing new RAM. Not entirely sure what to do. It stops for a few seconds, computer still responds but the app playing the media either stops responding or just waits, then promptly resumes about a minute later.

I am still not able to get vaapi working. Anyone able to help me out :p.

What have you done so far and what are the symptoms? I will try to help you if I can, but I am a Linux noob (first Linux experience is with this box). I did manage to get vaapi working and 1080p movies are playing smoothly with no dropped frames, according to XBMC (tested on 17GB LotR TT). My setup is HP MS, 5450, 3GB RAM, running XBMC on top of Ubuntu 11.04.

Hello Dusty :)

Awesome post-per-day-ratio there, that's more impressive than some of these guys that has 30 000 posts over two or three years!

Ok, so I have vSphere 5 running on mine with a couple of VM's. I also want to add a couple of drives with media on to share over the network for my HTPC. What's the easiest way of doing this? I was thinking of FreeNAS, but I don't have any space to backup the data first and then create raid sets. Or can I install FreeNAS and just add drives to share over the network, without creating a raid set?

The other option I can think of is installing Windows 2008 R2 and use Hyper-V for the VM's, then just share the drives in Windows...

Any suggestions?

I run ESXi 5.0 with FreeNAS 8.0.

FreeNAS will format the drives when you add them.

Additionally, I have had severe issues (read: constant) with ESXi and the onboard NIC when running at 1Gbps; the NIC literally turns itself off when ESXi boots (but works in other OSs) - so today (hopefully) I am getting a PCI-E 1Gbps NIC to resolve these issues.

Thanks, then I won't be able to use that.

I hope I don't have the same issues with my onboard NIC, haven't connected it to my gigabit switch yet. But I already have a gigabit PCI-E NIC installed as well. They're really cheap, paid R149 for mine.

I am presently running esxi 4.1 with a few vm's.

I am hoping to scrap it all and start over from scratch.

I would like to have a nas/storage server os running in VM but using direct passthrought of the connected sata hdd's.

Does anyone know if this is possible or any links to how to succesfully implement this.

You see, I am connecting my datastore hdd to the odd internal sata. And the other sata drives, that i want available via the passthrough will be comnected to the onboard sas port.

Just put everything together on mine yesterday, I didn't quite realise how snug that interior is. Luckily the active cooled gt210 fits a treat. Just got 3gb of RAM & a single 2tb hdd in at the moment, but will hopefully push that up in a couple of months with a RAID config.

Setting up software, the difference between hardware accelerated playback & vanilla software is staggering. I can't get it VLC to do it, but XBMC works great, even mplayer works fine with the right options. Pity.
