HP ProLiant MicroServer

Are you sure it is the PSU fan and not the system extraction fan? If its NOT the PSU, you can simply replace it with a quieter fan.

I'll check tonight. Will stop SysFan with finger and see if that solves it. I have other 120mm fans in other systems that aren't as loud I have the guide for fan replacement too: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1193-page7.html

Sounded like PSU to me. I think it's running @ full speed, where it should calm down after boot up.

Interesting concept but I'm battling a bit to see a strong application unless you want very strong protection for your files. With Greyhole you can effectively have multiple copies of the same files over different drives, or more importantly, different systems.Think of it as a transparent data mirroring system (even if the author say it's not supposed to be a backup setup).

For irreplaceable stuff, like personal data or your photo collection, this makes 100% sense and you'd be willing to give up N-times the disk space for strong redundancy.

But for normal files, such as movies for example - stuff you can get back with some effort, it does not make sense to double the required disk space for redundancy. <snip>

The nice part of Greyhole is that your redundancy level is determined on a per share basis. Thus, for my Movies share, I have NO redundancy, while for my family photos I can have N redundancy. And for some work documents I can have one extra copy.

Jannie, I have the same setup as zamicro, foto's and really important stuff I have N redundancy, reasonably important documents I have 2 backups and movies and series I have no backups.

I agree with your point on the minimal level of redudancy being very high, but tbh, in the time it takes a raid5 setup with a couple of disks to rebuild I could have reaquired enough movies and series to last me while I rebuild the rest of the library.

Thats why I said at start you have to look at what your needs are. If you want 1 disk failure cover on movies and series then yes RAID is better, however I don't really need that, and the time and space wasted RAID does not justify using it to me. That and I had a bunch of different sized disks lying around. The flexibility of Greyhole is what got me interested.

Another advantage of Greyhole is that the non-disk hardware can vary, and Greyhole can tolerate failures. If my HP server fries its motherboard or the HDD with linux on, I can plug the harddrives into any other pc, install any version of linux and if I install Greyhole with the same mount points specified and shares, the Greyhole array will function after a normal restart without needing a rebuild. Hardware raid will need a similar controller (might be expensive) and I'm not even sure software raid can be recovered in that case.

Horses for courses. I got what I wanted, with each system you build you have to look at what your needs are, and Greyhole fitted mine better than the others. I never meant its better than unRAID or normal RAID, just another alternative that people might consider. Nothing wrong with having more choices :)

I probably would have tried unRAID as well if I didnt have to pay for it... for now I'm happy with Greyhole, and see no reason to dish out some moola to try it out.

Sounds similar to the zraid I'm using... :p

Hi guys. A little a assistance pls. So i got one of these with 2*2TBs,a POV GT520 gfx and for the OS i went with ubuntu server (1st foray into linux). Anyways, that installed well enough after some trial and error. Next step was XBMC. i followed this guide "http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=XBMCbuntu#Install_XBMC" and things went okay. Now my problem is sound over hdmi. There just isn't any.
I installed "ALSA" as per the guide but sudo alsamixer gives me "cannot open mixer: No such file or directory" and aplay -l says "aplay: device_list:223: no soundcards found..."
Did a lot of googling but still no luck, so i was wondering if anyone here, has come across and solved this problem
Thnx

Have you tried this :

Just checking have you changed the audio output in xbmc to HDMI? I know you probably have but woth a mention I guess

Does this come with a single 1Gb module or two 512Mb ones?
1 x 1GB ECC Edit:- Doh PP is too quick;)

PM me if you guys want a microserver or two, the price is higher than previously, but still less than half the price of hp shop.
Please don't pm me if you're just curious, only if you are actually looking for one or two.

Thanks for the tips guys, but still no luck. I changed the audio output to hdmi within xbmc and tried the avforums solution but, no dice. I've been using a clean ubuntu server 10.043 installation, i think i'll now try 11.04 and see how that goes.

Yeah that is steep for delivery... I assume you come in under R1450 then including delivery? ;)
It looks like it's couriered.

check out the shop shop now ,

That is a bit steep. UK price is still effectively quite low because they've extended the rebate. Assume they're not doing that here.

Was it ever discounted in the US?

Well, I personally have 3 .On special, they've been the best value for money buy, Ive come across.

By far, and not badly built either. One I donated to my boet, it's now up to him to configure :) But really enjoying mine.
Got it as NAS and running 2 gaming servers off it ... Seems the CPU is handling well (although I did up the RAM to 4gb).
Apache, mySQL and PHP took awhile to talk to each other, but I got it right... I'm really from an MS background , so that took a while to get my head around...
