HP ProLiant MicroServer

I would appreciate some advice from the Microserver users here. What software would I require if I want to use one as a media player/ NAS?

I have one that I have loaded with 3 x 2TB drives and a GT520 graphics card. Thinking of using Openelec and XBMC and SAnzb.

Will I require any NAS software as well?

Hi guys

Quick Q, apologies if it has been covered already.

How can you have 5 x 2TB drives (as in the OP), when it has 4 drive bays?

Seriosuly looking at getting one of these as a NAS! Anything I should know? Will prob run home server or something on it.

There's a top 5.25" bay and you can flash the bios with a patched version to give you full speed on that port.

Thanks! I will have to do some more reading on this thread :)

It also has a internal usb port on the mother board so you install freenas on a usb that stays inside the case and run the bios patch for the 5th sata port then its 5 drives for storage.

Very cool feature thanks! However, I am leaning towards the Home Server 2008 OS as it is more versatile. Would it be possible to boot off of USB to Home Server? Becasue whereas I would have possibly put a SSD in the 5.25 drive bay, I won't be able to anymore. And it probably isn't worth installing the OS on one of the drives in RAID?

Thoughts?

Thanks

I dont think Windows will work "out of the box", I've tried on previous windows versions and it did not work.

What else do you think you will need, windows is not more versatile than linux.

Windows isn't made to be run off USB devices. A lot of fiddling would be needed to get it to run on or even install to a flash or other USB device. This goes for all current Windows Operating systems.

What you can do, however, is put another drive under the 5.25" bay and put a SATA card into the PCI-E port and attach it that way, theoretically giving you a maximum of 18TB of space.

I'm planning on buying a couple of these.

Can you power up the machine via the remote? Or do you actually have to press the button on the unit?

Thanks guys :) On second thoughts an SSD is quite small, should fit with the 5 x 3TB drives!

But.. If I go 6 x 3TB, and install the OS on one of the drives - is that recommended or not?

I'm not hardcore enough for Linux :D I'm used to Windows and it works for me. My other machines are all Windows too so it makes sense I think.

But... But... But... Your name is fxit_man! :p

I was thrown in the deep end with my job in terms of Linux. Not that difficult at all actually, just different. Now I don't really use the GUI anymore, default app opened on startup is Terminal.

If you buy one of these e-Sata->Sata you can loop the e-Sata port back into the case and connect the 6th drive beneath the 5.25" bay. I could not find a similar cable in SA, so had to order that one.

Unless you also want to use the server as a workstation, I see no reason why not to install Linux. It is a lot easier than you think.

I was unable to get the eSATA -> SATA cable working. Apparently it is unpowered, so how did you do it?
