:D haha true true! I have no doubt I could get it working, it's just that i'm not used to it and would be more comfortable with Windows for now. Maybe I'll mess around with a Linux distro on my own PC or something first! At least I have a tiny bit of terminal experience what with OS X :)

Unless you also want to use the server as a workstation, I see no reason why not to install Linux. It is a lot easier than you think.

Thanks for that idea. Sounds great! Also interested in the power question below.

I might like to use it as a workstation too. Or at least have that option if I ever wanted to. And I could RDP to it etc. too. I shall look into some linux solutions too though.

In terms of speed, does it offer any advantages over Windows? (transfer speed)

Can you not run a power cable to the drive too?
 
You can get the eSATA to SATA cable and then get a cable that goes from 1 x Molex to 2 x SATA power to power the top 2 drives.
 
I must have the wrong cable (eSATA -> pSATA) as it has both SATA and power in one - so no, you cant plug power in as well :(

A SSD would be a waste for this application. Once booted it stays on and it's not like you are constantly opening & closing apps that need instant access.

I am not yet, but hoping to get one in my new n40l whs 2011 build. I have a.nice 3in 1 5.25" bay device that i am going to install along with the slim optical drive.

Can't decide between pure ssd or the seagate hybrid.


Also for those folks interested incredible corruption have the 2gb v165w thumb drives for R35, I know you can find larger capacity ones for same price, but I like the low profile thumb drives for my microserver. Perfectly invisible for an easy openelec install.

want to know how it performs with a SSD because some1 told me because of the speed of the MS cpu, you can't/won't get full potential of the SSD's speed.

if that isn't true, I am considering getting a MS with SSD for something like running quickbooks and everyday browsing. (quite a lot of tabs open at same time so also want to see how that performs)

I am amazed at how long quickbooks can take to open or do some searching :(

otherwise will have to go with initial 2400 Sandy setup

Surely you can use a molex-sata power splitter inside the case? Or hack your existing cable by splicing into it.

I currently have my HTPC with a low profile graphics card. I am thinking of adding a video capture card, to capture video from my PVR. It looks like due to encryption I won't be able to capture from HDMI, so normal AVI inputs is needed.

what do you guys suggest?

The lowest cost option will be those USB easycap dongles, then the PCI capture cards. (I wonder if there is space for a card like that?

Apparently these things are quite ignorant of protected formats since it connects via component which ignores the protection bits :p

Look for a capture card that is compatible with MythTV.. IF you have an old PC you can set iy up as a MythTv backend server and the HP server as front end box along with XBMC
