Okay so far I've managed to setup my home server with XBMC and the sickbeard + SABnzbd addon and after a glitch or two everyhing is downloading as it should. Only ordered my gfx card now so can't watch it on the TV yet. Well, can watch with VGA cable but no audio.
just unplug it and plug the wdtvlive back in is what my wife told me.

Thanks. So hdmi sound to amp and then picture? Or do you then use the dvi port for that?
Next purchase is a good sound system.

Nope, your HDMI carries your audio and video signal. So thats all your amp needs. I bought this Sony sound bar which has an amp with 3 HDMI inputs and one HDMI out (for the TV). It costs R5000.
A friend of mine spent R15 000 on a yamaha amp and 5.1 speakers, especially for his home theatre PC. The joke is that most files (mkvs) don't always encode the full 5.1 sound. I think the HDMI graphic cards also have a part to play in how the sound is decoded. So maybe a dedicated sound card is the way to go.
Personally I'm happy with the Sony Sound bar and the 2.1 sound, even though the sound bar can emulate 5.1 sound. Sometimes if the file supports it I switch to 5.1 mode via XBMC settings, but mostly I couldn't be bothered.

My HDMI card sends DD5.1 to my amp with no issues at all. It also handshakes with the amp and reports the truehd and Dts hd...

It's more a matter of what soundtrack is saved into the file you are playing.
Perhaps this has been asked and I have missed it, but are there any reliable retailers (online or otherwise) who have stock of this at present? I am not finding anything...
Very interesting. What command did you use to get that info dump? Are you using windows, linux, what graphics card?
you need to get a reciever that will handle both audio and video
what price range you looking at?
