Guys, can you list the otpions we have wrt remotes + receiver.

Looking hopefully for one that does not use batteries that need replacing so a bluetooth / wireless one. :)

Don't forget to give your MicroServer a hug for all the hard work she does :D

/sidenote, thanks to everyone for their awesome input in this thread, it is worth reading through most of the comments and suggestions :)

Can't say about yours but I have a male one... far more predictable ;)

As for the remote I have one of these:

Old model now but it works out of the box with openelec, although the mouse movement takes a bit of mastering.

Edit : This looks like the replacement model

1GB is hundreds. Using it in one of my HP's.
Try go for the GT520 though. Not only does it offer more grunt, but it supports Cuda technology. Cuda will help with video conversion and take some load off the CPU.

Mike the 1GB DDR3 GT 210 :

Powered by NVIDIA GeForce 210 GPU
- Integrated with industry's best 1GB DDR3 memory and 64-bit memory interface
- Features Dual link DVI-I/ D-SUB/HDMI with HDCP protection
- Support NVIDIA® CUDA™ Technology
- Support NVIDIA® PhyX™ Technology.

Anyone know if the GT 210 is good enough for 1080p flawless video playback? Mike your 1GB DDR3 a Gigabyte as well? Please confirm, about to make the purchase :D

Not mine dude. Says nothing on the box and no driver support.
I bought the GT520 on Mon. Going to install on Sat.
I get perfect 1080p playback using the 210 BTW. Also audio over the HDMI. My HDMI goes into a matrix switch which then splits the audio and video to toslink and HDMI. Toslink to my amp and Turtle Beach, and HDMI to projector.

Yes it is...but the 520GT is 3 generations newer, and not much more cash really?

but yeah, it will work fine.

and its hdmi 1.4 as opposed to the 1.3 that the 210 offers
if you into that sort of thing

Sure

It has come down. Was R1,600 odd when I purchased it.
Output one does the split between HDMI and Toslink (still carries the audio on the HDMI though so you don't lose it).
Output two is just HDMI.

On my setup I have my HD PVR, HP Microserver, XBox360 and WDTV Live Hub hooked up. Output one to my projector and amp. Output two to bedroom TV. You can assign any input to any output. Real handy.

Mike I am just confirming that the flawless playback also occurs when there is camera panning, usually a few stutters are prevalent with low end graphic cards. This is not the case for the GT 210 according to you right? Just checking if there is a need to spend an extra R300 for the GT520 if the GT210 does the same job. I only intend to use it for High Def playback.

I read that the fan makes some noise but also read that this isn't the case :p, i say go for the GT520 since it supports 1.4a HDMi (3D comptabile for future reference) and it is 3 generations newer. So you moving a generation ahead at R100 a pop :).

Most of the members who opted for NVidia have taken this route, i doub't you will be disappointed :).

I am very particular with the quality of the audio/video when I watch movies and TV Shows dude. It has to be perfect. That said - I cannot fault my GT210. I am running the GT210 with a stock HPMS setup. 2GB RAM.
I would however rather spend a little more and get the GT520. Mainly because I wanted more functionality out of my HPMS. My projector is 3D capable but requires nVidia 3D Vision. I also want to and rips (got a bluray ROM in the HPMS) directly on the HPMS and the GT210 does not aid here (in my case anyway). The GT520 has Cuda and 3D Vision so much better value IMO.

I originally went for the GT210 because it served my immediate needs. Not even a month later and I forked out for the GT520 as my needs increased. So ye dude - fork out the little bit more and go straight to GT520.

To give you an idea on converting using Cuda.
I was doing an MKV to MP4 conversion using Xillisoft. Xillisoft supports Cuda if it is present. With the GT210 it is not so the rip was done the good old fashioned way using the CPU. The 1080p conversion took 4 hours and 12 mins on the HPMS.
I then did the same thing with my desktop which has a GTX560 and supports Cuda. The conversion took 14 minutes. While my desktop is more powerful than the HPMS, I have no doubt in my mind that Cuda aided a LOT with the increase in speed.

I also stream from my HPMS to multiple Plex Clients and DLNA Clients. Where the client cannot handle the codecs, the HTMS will transcode. I am pretty sure a Cuda based card will relieve the CPU of the transcoding but still need to test this. I hope it is the case.

When I put the GT520 in my HPMS on Sat I will re-run the 1080p conversion so we can get a direct - on the same box - comparison of pre/post Cuda conversions.

Hope this helps with your decision dude :)

Hey guys,

I am going to a lan and want to share the files on my micro server via DC, I am running freenas8. I am considdering to buy a second network card for my pc and using a crossover cable to hook my server up. This it would work? Ive never been a fan of crossover cables but hey I guess I can try :) Any other ideas?

Anyone?

From what I understand, a crossover is no longer necessary and modern nics are intelligent enough to figure out what you are doing with the cable. I have a vague recollection of some memory doing this about 3 years ago and did not have to get a crossover cable.
Straight nic to nic worked. Just make sure the IP's are on the same subnet and in the same range and all should be good.

Otherwise just take along a 4 port switch, set your IP's, and you and your mates plug into the switch?

Thanks I am also a freak if there is any jitter/stutter - annoys the crap out of me! :)

Looks like the GT520 is the way to go.. Hey Yuu where do you find it at R100 more a pop? Takelot is looking bleak (They only have the MSI GT520 - http://www.takealot.com/electronics/pc-components-1111/msi-geforce-gt520-ddr3-memory-graphics-card-2gb,11010920. Has 2GB DDR3. Not sure if it has a low profile bracket with it though. The one mentioned on myhtpc.co.za is the 1GB version which is out of stock from Takealot.

The GT520 that is listed on the myhtpc website is from Sybaritic. GIGABYTE® nVidia® GeForce GT520 - 1GB GDDR3, 64-Bit Memory Bus, PCI Express 2.0, 1x D-SUB, 1x DVI, 1x HDMI, HDCP Compliant - It's R500 excl shipping. Maybe that's the one to go for from all the comments.. unless there is a cheaper alternative elsewhere :D

Edit: The Gigabyte GT520 from Sybaritic includes a low profile bracket :) However it does require a minimum of 300W though ;/ The N36L has a 200W PSU. Dodgy, but sounds like common practice :)
Misread you Yuu, R100 per generation - doh! :P

I picked up a Gigabyte GT520 at Matrix Warehouse at Greenstone for R529. It was the last one and I wanted two (one for my sons HPMS). They called yesterday to say they had lots more stock of them in.
Hope this helps if you stay in the Edenvale area.

EDIT: And yes - it does come with an LP bracket :)

Hi
Posted in another thread as well but think this one is more relevant.
Also need some help.
Installed openelec on a new n40l. Followed milkmans guide but cant get samba config to pickup the unused 2tb drive.
It only picks up the 250gb drive that comes with the n40l where openelec is installed on.
When the pc boots up it does pick up the 2tb drive.
Any ideas?
