OK sounds right.

Is it better to format 2nd HD as NTFS or Ext3/4. NTFS seems to be very slow in OE. Your experience.
 
Nadimm, please provide me with steps how how to use GParted and Unetbootin from my laptop. Which versions do I download?
 
You will have to run/boot gparted on the microserver. Not sure if you can use it over the network.

Download the iso image for gparted to your laptop. Latest version. Download latest unetbootin. From unetbootin browse to the image file, select. Create bootable flash on the flash drive you've plugged in.

Plug in usb created on laptop into microserver. Restart microserver, and enter bios. Change boot order, so usb flash disk (might be called usb zip, ask google) is first boot device. Save changes. Should restart and then boot into gparted.


On the new drive create a new partition, max size. Format to Ntfs since you would be able to access the drive from windows if necessary. Personal preference.

You will lose any information on the drive.

Can't give you exact instructions since I'm not at home. Google is your friend.
 
I copied an fdisk executable from another box and used that to partition a new disk from an ssh session to the openelec box.

. Openelec has newfs stuff on it already for formatting. Use ext4.
 
OPENELEC: Anyone know of a better way to copy a lot of files over from an external to the microserver? I don't see a way to copy and queue multiple files on the default file manager.
 
I click files once, they turn green. This means it is selected then just copy the lot over.
Don't know if that's what you after.
 
Yup, I have the Esquire wireless mini keyboard, still undecided on what remote to get.
So concentrating on filling drives with content now.

THX nadimm and sinbad (posts:#2643 and #2644); I'll try your approach on next build. I did manage to find old external drive, and used this casing to plug in internal drive and format it (NTFS).
 
This openelec is a heap of nonsense. I cannot get the sound to work properly at all with the GT520 after following dozens of sites regarding the config files and output settings. I was under the impression it was designed to work with the GT520 as that is what was recommended. It also doesn't work with my wireless usb stick; doesn't work with my receiver unit I have; cannot be programmed to work properly with my older remote etc.

It really is a heap of crap in my opinion. I've decided to go with the XBMCBuntu install instead. At least that way I can have some sort of control of the operating system.

The HP is awesome though...
 
DJ so far OpenElec works out the box with everything for me.
Was told I would have problems with my video card, but didn't.
U sure u did everything right?

Before you go with XBMCBuntu, I'd appreciate it if you gave this a try:

2) Extract it with 7-Zip ( Will take about 8gb of space )
3) Download and extract this: http://mediahog.co.za/firmwares/USBIT.7z
4) Run the app included in the second archive, point it at the extracted firmware and tell it to "Restore" to the flashdisk( Has to be 8GB or more, will not work on smaller flashdrives currently ).
5) Put the flashdisk into the microserver's internal port, turn it on and it should boot straight

Should also work on a PC that has an NVIDIA card, I am working on getting ATI drivers working at the moment.

I developed this to work on my N36L microserver, but can confirm that it works 100% on the N40L as well, tested with an NVIDIA GT520 card ( gigabyte )

I've done a boat load video optimization, the image was created for my older N36l microserver, so it's not going to hog the improved resources of the N40l.

No config required, everything should just work out of the box :)

Yip, I followed Milkman's instructions to the T. There are well documented issues with Openelec and HDMI audio. I working tried every combination under the sun. Also, because you have no access to the OS you can't intercept and change IR messages. All in all I find it to be unworkable. XBMCBuntu sounds like a better option to me...

Any suggestions for Bluray playback on a BD ROM using Openelec or Linux XBMC? It'd be nice if it could do 3D as well. Is this possible and what drives and graphics card would you recommend?

If it proves too difficult or impossible I wouldn't be adverse to a dedicated Bluray player, rather.

So what do you think?

404 page not found with your first link?

What size is the download btw? I also don't have an 8gb flash disk. Could I use and external hard drive?

The other issue is that I'm assuming it won't solve my problems with the remote receiver (although these will surely be solved once I receive the Harmony 700) and my wireless internet...
