Is a 1.1gb download, extracts to 8gb.

I am not sure whether it will work on an external, haven't yet tried ( but I can't think of a reason that it shouldn't ).

If you'd like ( and have an ubuntu 11.04 disk handy ), and are willing to give me remote SSH access, I can config your microserver exactly like I've done my flash image.

I've got the Logitech 700 as well, working 100% with the microserver with some tweaking on the harmony's side ( can share that config too if you want )

Looks like Openelec is definitely not the way forward. Gonna give XBMCbuntu a try rather.
 
I've also switched to XBMCbuntu and found it an improvement.

Regarding the jitter/judder I experienced on panning scenes. Enabling "sync playback to display" and "adjust display refreshrate to match video" options under Video settings did not improve anything. I have however found a solution/workaround that works for me and result in smooth playback (same quality as PS3 output). I force output to the display (plasma) to 50Hz (i.e disable adjust refreshrate to match video), and then enable "sync playback to display". All 25fps movies then play as they should, and the 23.97 fps movies are speed up about 4% to match 25 fps (I believe this is what the studios do in any case when converting 24fps movies to 25fps). This gives exellent results, and most videos/movies is 24fps or 25fps in any case.

The only issue now is the odd 30fps videos that cannot play smooth under these settings. I have no idea of linux and adusting advanced settings. If someone can assit me in writing a script do select the above settings for 24/25fps videos (enable sync display, disable adjust display refresh), but for 30fps vidoes enable both "sync display" and "adjust display refresh (i.e. 60hz).
 
This openelec is a heap of nonsense. I cannot get the sound to work properly at all with the GT520 after following dozens of sites regarding the config files and output settings. I was under the impression it was designed to work with the GT520 as that is what was recommended. It also doesn't work with my wireless usb stick; doesn't work with my receiver unit I have; cannot be programmed to work properly with my older remote etc.

It really is a heap of crap in my opinion. I've decided to go with the XBMCBuntu install instead. At least that way I can have some sort of control of the operating system.

The HP is awesome though...

Hi DJ, Use the following to sort out your audio, I also have a GT520 card, and this works for me (as suggested by Sinbad):

1) Change your audio output options in XBMC to custom, plughw:0,7

I were in the same boat as you, my downloads are now completely automated.

Thanks. I did this about thirty times and created a config file for the menu sounds but absolutely nothing works properly. The only way I could get it to work was to use default hdmi and custom plughw:0,7 but this only works for some of my files. Most audio files won't play and some videos play at twice the speed so they sound like chipmunks. I find it truly pathetic that Openelec can be this finnicky and requires so much configuration for simple functions to just...well...work...

I also spent a few hours this weekend to try get it right. You have to tweak every setting and pray it works. Eventually had a ragequit and installed Windows 7. Now my wireless works, my remote works, my streaming works, XBMC works and my downloads works.

I don't have menu sounds but I don't care about that. Every piece of media I have plays perfectly, including AAC, mp3 and Dolby digital audio.

You seem to be one of the lucky ones. I get absolutely no audio from either plughw:0,3 or plughw:0,7 - and I SSH'd in to check and those are the only two options available to me. I don't mind not having menu sounds either - it's getting actual audio to work that has had me pulling my hair out. Openelec is incredibly finnicky in my short experience with it and I'm in no way happy with it.

I'm starting to think that buying a new Windows license is the way to go. At least then I'm guaranteed that everything will work properly without requiring an IT engineering degree...

Did you go to the XBMC Sound options and set all values to HDMI?

Yip. I went through as many combinations as possible. I tried all of the custom combinations then started trying the custom and hdmi combinations. Then hdmi and custom combinations until default HDMI and custom plughw:0,7 eventually worked for 50% of my media. The other 50%...well...it is useless until I install something a little less confusing and doesn't require as much manual configuration...
 
Add dts to the working group of sound standards ;)

He previously listed the audio formats working for him, add to that DTS. I just say install Windows 7, it's so much easier, that is if you have a licence, or try what bullzeye.za said, a 8GB flash drive is much cheaper than Windows 7.
 
Then again...Windows 7 will just...well...work. Linux might still require some tweaking and from what I hear, the new Ubuntu doesn't recognise USB wifi cards "out of the box". So seeing as Telkom won't install a new line here, I'm stuffed unless I go the Windows route.

Sometimes I absolutely hate how complicated people make things. All I want is a box that runs XBMC - it shouldn't be this difficult...
 
I'm trying some other custom sound stuff now, want to see if I can get menu sounds working.
Will report back as soon as I'm allowed to reboot the damn box. Females and their Greys Anatomy...:rolleyes:
