The way I understand it, in XBMC's settings you will need to change your audio output device to custom and then name the device plughw:0,3 and then do the same for the passthrough output device...

I'd sacrIfice menu sounds to get the rest working, as I'm not that familiar with alsa.
What is your pass through device set to in xbmc?

my pass through device is set at hdmi (alsa) the problem comes as soon as i set my speaker configuration to 5.1 i get a error message and then no sound on anything

Try setting it to plughw:0,3 and deleting asound.conf (reboot needed)

got my 5.1 working just sounds crap as soon as i enable dts and acc it shows no error and no sound think there is a handshaking issue
edit : Set both my sound to plughw:0,3
Mine is suddenly working now using custom plughw0,7 for both and by deleting the config file.
In case anyone has similar issues as I did with audio, if you pass the audio through and switch on crossfading then it won't play certain music. Crossfading needs to be switched off...

this is quite strange dj...
it should work through hdmi out of the box if you set all sound output to hdmi. maybe you did the "custom plug" thingy wrong the first time
i've never needed to modify the asound.conf file to get sound (even though i don't get the irritating "bleep bleep" menu sounds, which I prefer)
btw, there is a page dedicated to getting your sound working in milkman's guide, using putty.

For those of you who have upgraded to OpenELEC (Generic Build) 1.95.3 (Latest Eden Beta launched May 1st) and are suddenly having problems accessing your HTPC via SAMBA shares, or are otherwise unable to access it with earlier versions, do the following:
1) Switch on your HTPC. go to Settings > Add-ons
2) Open the "OpenELEC OS Settings" Add-on - it should be under "program add-ons"
3) Open the Second tab, titled "Network"
4) Change the "Network Interface" from "Eth0" to "Eth1"
5) Click OK to save.
6) Type in "\\openelec" in windows explorer to access your shares again, as usual. (old network mounts will now work again, also)

Definitely didn't work out of the box. The custom settings I repeated thirty odd times before it eventually started working last night...

The only reason to modify the asounf.conf file is to enable menu sounds, as far as I know. Now if you are forced to use the custom plughw:0,7 settings, then creating the asound.conf file to enable menu sounds will probably disable your video and music audio. It is nonsense...

well there are a crapload of people using the HP with OpenELEC mind you.
I've upgraded to the latest OpenELEC, ReFocus & PseudoTV and everything is working 100%...... while my PC's XBMC cant even run the latest PseudoTV. go figure :erm:
My Skins on the other hand work on the PC and not OpenELEC...lol. I manually extracted the files via samba though and voila - works perfectly.
Bootup time is 39 seconds - not sure if its faster or not but loading my libraries and scrolling through them is now TWICE as snappy

just a question about refocus
i cant seem to find the music menu - cant get it listed on the homepage
everything else shows fine and I can turn them on and off, video, programs etc
I just cant seem to get the music one to show up
it shows up fine in the stock theme
im using openelec beta 2 (must still upgrade to the latest beta)
any ideas??
its the only thing thats not working on refocus, that and supertv
Hey lads. A quick question : Both myself and my mate got the HP Proliant Server and installed XBMCbuntu on it. However whenever we boot up with our USB drives connected it goes past the bios screen and just before XBMC boots up it gives a black screen with a flashing dash. This doesn't occur when the drives are removed and the pc is started up all over again (We quickly connect them back up at the XBMC Eden splash screen. I'm thinking it's a GRUB setting perhaps, I have even set the USB boot priority to low in the BIOS to no avail. Please advise.

went into the bios and disabled that external drive in the boot options, works perfectly now

Anyone that can help me with the above: programming XBMCbuntu to check the framerate of the video. Then if it is 24fps or 25fps to disable "adjust display refreshrate to match video", and when it is 30fps to enable "adjust display refreshrate to match video".
Will appreciate. Dont understand this Linux....
