I have found another one with a back lit keyboard. I have the same gripe.
I watch with an HD protector so it at just provides some dim light most of the time. Would still prefer proper back lit though.

anyone know if its possible to run video through DVI and audio through HDMI on the same card??
sold my tv so using my monitor in the meanwhile with DVI, but cant seem to get the hdmi audio
working to the onkyo reciever?

Unlikely imo. In my experience devices either except sound over the same source as video (ie HDMI) or via a classic sound option like optical.
 
Hi Guys

I need help with this one. I recieved my HP on Friday, and have just spend and entire weekend trying to set it up as a HTPC.
I have a Forsa GT 210, outputting to a Onkyo amp. I have so far tried the Openelec Generic 1.0.2 install and XBMCbuntu 11.0.
Openelec 1.95.5 would not install.

I have the common sound via HDMI problem, but after reading the Milkman guide, as well as 'n few dozen or so threads, I am still unable to get sound via HDMI.

I have so far used Putty as SSD, ran the aplay -l command, and tried all the different card and device settings.
I have created numerous asound.conv files, and edited and reboot a thousand times.

I then tried a Windows 7 install, thinking I would just run a XBMC 11.0 install on top of that. But after installing the latest Nvidia drivers, Windows does not pick up the 210 as a audio device. When I go to device manager->sound,video and game controllers, it shows 4 HDA Nvidia devices. But I still have the red cross on my speakers icon, and when I go the playback devices, it just tells me that there is no audio playback devices installed.

This makes me think that this card is somehow not compatible with the N40L, or am I missing something altogether.

Use the terminal command. Type in "alsamixer.
If you see two xx in the middle, press m to unmute. Then press f6 to see where card is installed. It will either be 3 or 7. Then quit. Then go to xbmc audio settings and use custom and then plughw: 0,3 or 0,7.
 
Will try that thanks. But why would Windows not pick up the 210 as an audio device ? Even after installing the drivers.
 
I am on the verge of fixing this problem with a 12 pound hammer.

Would someone more versed in the art of Linux be willing to help me out and have a go at setting this thing up.
I will be willing to pay a small fee or a few beer in return of the favor. Please pm me if someone in the East rand is willing to give it a try.

It is probably the driver that you're using for that card. My colleague also had lots of issues with his audio via HDMI using Linux.
I can ask him tomorrow again what he did to solve his issues - although he's not using an HP Microserver.
 
I believe that is possible, although I have tried 4 different Windows drivers including the one shipped with the card, when I tried that route.

Last night I have played around a bit more, and downloaded the latest Alsa drivers, also tried Pulse Audio, but still nothing. I have used alsamixer to check the mute settings, and it was indeed muted, but even after unmuting, i still have no joy with sound.

I also tried swithching the HDMI cable directly to my TV thinking it might be a problem with my HT reciever, but that didn't help either.

Anyone want to buy a brand new HP ? :mad:

I think you should try and get another video card to test.

Another alternative is to try a usb sound card with the default vga output. Even if you don't use the usb sound card again they're cheap and will give you a 3.5mm jack. You'll have to set a custom audio output using this route.

Incidentally, why couldn't you get openelec 1.95.5 to install?
 
openelec 1.95.5 gave me a message along the lines of "Could not find kernel" when booting from the usb drive created by the setup.
I have downloaded it twice, thinking the first download was corrupt. But I got the same message.

I was thinking about getting a new screen card, but I first want to make sure I not missing anything. Just seems like a waste to have bought the 210.


Can you suggest a card that is proven to work with the HP. GT 520 perhaps, but specifically which manufacturer and model ?

What happens when you boot without the 210 installed?
 
I have not tried that yet.
If I succeed in installing openelec without the screen card will it automatically detect it when I fit the card and reboot ?

Edit : One more thing, when running alsamixer, the device shows as HDMI HDA device, but where you select mute or unmute, it shows spdif instead of hdmi. Card select gives me an option of default, HDA HDMI Device or other. I selected the hdmi device.

I'm running Openelec 1.02 Generic with an AMD/ATI 5450 in my Microserver, N36L with sound going via HDMI to the TV.

The audio on mine also did not work out the box, it took a while, trying various settings but these work for me, no messing with any Openelec config files, just these XBMC settings: under System Settings/Audio output

Audio output: Analog
Speaker Configuration: 2:1
Boost volume Level on downmix: Checked
Audio output device: hdmi

The other options are greyed out with these selections.

With this I get sound on all my files but no "system clicks" on remote inputs.

I hope these work, if not then just send the box down to me, I'll hammer it for you, really ;)
 
I have tried that, but get a message of "Could not initialize audio device" if I set the Audio output to anything other that HDMI. In fact, I get the same message with most settings. Some combinations of Audio output and Audio output device does not give me the message, but still no sound.

Never used openelec but it's linux so should detect the card at boot and give you an output on the screen. All that might be required of you is to install the nvidia drivers as it will probably be using generic ones.

I'm running openelec 1.95.5 with hd5450. Worked out of the box with openelec, but had problems with Ubuntu and Xbmcbuntu aka xbmc live.

Audio initialization was a problem with 1.95.2-1.95.4, but i don't think it's related.

I think the better choice would be the 520.

With regards to openelec, try installing version 1.02, then manually update it to 1.95.5. In my experience openelec is the most hassle free route including setting up automatic downloads etc.

For the record, I am still running 1.95.3
4 and 5 are too buggy for my liking. 3 is almost stable.

there was a problem with the audio/video drivers on 1.95.3. The issue was reported on github and then fixed in 1.95.5

Audio initialization fail after display sleep forcing a reboot, toggle audio settings, reboot, to get it working again. Was very frustrating.
 
How would I do a manual upgrade ? I assume since there is no terminal in openelec I would have to use Putty.
