HP ProLiant MicroServer

I had a lot of problems on Ubuntu.

Openelec took 15 minutes to setup. And they're out of beta. If there isn't any other reason you're running Ubuntu, I would go this route. Mostly hassle free

You need a remote receiver for the n40l that is capable of managing the power off/on, regardless of whether you use a harmony or something else.

FLIRC.tv. Best buy I made whole year. You can literally use any remote with it.

Seriously? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of having a Harmony?
I don't want to program each button into anything (esp if you use most of the buttons on your remote, rather than just the cursor keys as in their demo).
The awesome thing about the Harmony is that you just tell it what device you're controlling and it works immediately. (also, macros, activities etc. etc. of course)
And at US$ 22, you could just as well get a cheap MCE remote and use it's USB receiver. That's what I did and it works great.

Unless you're saying don't use a Harmony, just use some remote you have lying around. That would be cheaper. Insane though. You'd miss out on so much functionality and convenience. Personally, now that I've been spoiled, I despise having more than one remote in my lounge.

Link.

Frustrated with my harmony. Thinking of selling it on

Seriously? How come? Mine's an older model and I've never had any problems with it.
BTW, that was the link. Put "flirc.tv" in your address bar. :erm:

I haven't tried it with my server yet, but doesn't seem to get the on/off correct on my tv and dstv, and gets the current state wrong if you switch the tv off at the tv itself.

Didn't think they would deliver here.

Ya, some devices you need to tweak the settings a bit, especially on/off and especially those crap dstv decoders.
There's a trick to it that goes something like customise the settings to use "on" and "off" instead of the on/off toggle option.
You can also change the IR timings of the buttons for stuff like dstv decoder. Not as difficult as it sounds.

I've also found the "help" menu actually works really well with this. For me it's normally one or 2 extra steps only - "help" - is your tv off? - "Yes" - Is your decoder off? - "no"; now is it off? "yes".

Of course it won't remember the state of devices that've been altered off the remote. IR is not a two way communication. It knows what state devices are in by what you do on the remote. (This applies to switching off manually as well as changing inputs etc.)
You can fool it though, so for example, if you've switched off everything manually (God knows why), then just cover up the transmitter on the remote and power off everything via it. Then it'll know everything's off next time you need to use it.
Same if you've changed inputs. Cover the transmitter and press that activity button - then the remote's state will match what your actual devices are set to.

BTW, if by "server" you mean your media machine - please don't tell me you have a Harmony but you're controlling media with a keyboard & / or mouse. That's criminal. Especially if you're running XBMC.

I understand IR, i'm just saying its a schlep. Reason I do it manually, is coz my place is so small its sometimes easier to get up and switch off than look for the remote.

I use the android remote, so too does my wife. Its MUCH better IMO then any remote, especially with allshare, and the youtube and call/sms features on the phone. I bought the 700 for visitors, but I think i'd rather just leave them my old htc desire.

I havent played around much since the receiver I bought didn't work, and I haven't had time to find one that does. So I'll give it another go, maybe XBMC + Harmony700 will outweigh the annoyances of on/off. Otherwise I'll sell it to someone on the forum :D

So say I want to use my TV remote just to switch the TV on, and maybe change the source (hdmi1, hdmi2) and volume. Would it be possible to use the same remote then for the XBMC and use every other button to control XBMC.
