With the E350 you don't need to buy a graphics card and it will run in your current case. You are also welcome to fit in anything from a slim line CFi case to a ITX monster like the CoolerMaster Elite 120.
Just putting the E350 out there as an alternative. I have never liked Hoender Poep servers...
My current E350 setup comes to R6k, more than half of that was 2x 3TB Seagates and a Vertex4.
This will destroy any HP Microserver.

BTW, anyone know of any advantages to upgrading to Openelec2.0? The only issue I have with the current version is that it can't run Super TV, but that's about it. If it requires a full reinstallation then I can't see the benefit at the moment...

I'm already on OpenElec 3 (well actually 2.9.5).
Version 2 is a stable release but I found that it sucked a bit. My sound was dodgy and the restart option would never work and it used to slow down after being on for a while.
Moving to the new beta (running XMBC Frodo) has solved all these issues - so I would actually say that the new beta for me is more stable than 2.0 was. I wouldn't recommend it though if you are scared things are going to break when they release updates.
P.S. It seems my SuperSport plugin is no longer working on the new XBMC, I still have to go and see if I can fix it. Still have it on my iPad XMBC and Android though, so not totally at a loss.

i put the files into nice directories like the guide suggests. i know want to scrape but need the internet access. eventually going to add sickbeard and all that good stuff but need internet access.
how do i install a 3g dongle? i have the software but im assuming its not a plug and install thing with openlec. did some initial googling and they mentioned repositories etc.
can someone shed some light on this please?

I do believe Airplay was added to XBMC Eden (OpenELEC 2) and quite a few under the skin features.

I would be interested in a pre-built out-the-box AMD E-350 system if the price is right.
But building PC's myself...I no longer have a care in the world for that.
As a second XBMC "client" in my house it would be a consideration.

I actually had the E350 at a higher price. You forget a PSU, which is another R500+ for a decent one, as well as a hard drive, which I personally don't care for but which the Micro Server comes with as standard. Nice cases also come in at more than R350 in general, but that's pretty subjective I suppose.
What I had in mind was a custom built aluminium chassis with a PicoPSU to provide power and a mSATA SSD for storage. Motherboards with the CPU were in the region of R1800+. If they're that inexpensive then that's pretty good news.

Okay so I have my server Up and running (HP Proliant with OpenElec and XBMC) but i have got a couple of issues:
1 - I can't seem to see the server from my windows 7 pc (I would like to be able to manage the data from the pc ie changing file names to ease scraping, removing duplicates, adding media, etc) Samba is installed
2 - is there a way for the ps3 to pick up my microserver and it's drives and media (I used to use mediaserver when my media was on my pc but I want it to pick up media fro mthe microserver)

1. OpenElec should sort sharing out for you automatically. I would recommend you assign the server a static IP (you can do this in XBMC under OpenElec Settings). Then see if you can access it directly by using the IP from Windows explorer (e.g. \\192.168.1.4).
2. Sorry have no idea how PS3 works.
Airplay is already included in my version and I'm using it at the moment. IIRC one can upgrade to new versions of XBMC without upgrading the operating system, so XBMC upgrades are irrelevant to an extent...

I might be wrong but if I'm not mistaken, OpenElec has SAMBA file sharing disabled by default. Easily solved by simply turning it on via the menu.

Can't remember, installed mine a while back but haven't had any issues with smb yet. There are a bunch of folders that it shares automatically but can't remember if the "master switch" is on or off by default. Just check the settings I guess.
