HP ProLiant MicroServer

It mounts to /media/volume label if you format with a label. Every time, same place. For ext4 file systems anyway. I wouldn't bother with any other ;)

Dudes I cant seem to install openelec 2.0.0 generic it keeps saying mounting failed or something then crashes... I reformated the usb to a FAT16 just like melkman said but still nothing...

There really isn't much to it. Have you tried following the installation guide on openelec site?

dammit! can only load generic 1. everything else just shows the splash screen and then a blank screen. done for the day. bloody disappointing and frustrating. staring at the blank screen. going back to build 1 again...

back to square one.

Did you verify the download? Make sure the MD5 checksum matches with what is given on the download page.

Nevermind got it working... HDMI was a breeze too on the HD5450...

Just use
analogue
custom
plug:hdmi

BOOm works like a bomb

akescpt may I suggest building a USBkey as a administrator? that might sort out your problem.

Glad you came right. You should try the new beta, I'm actually finding it more stable than the 2.0 release.

I'll try it sometime... If I knew about OPENELEC sooner I would've never used XBMCBUNTU to begin with :)

It does have the PVR function yes. Cant see where you'll be able to plug in a TV card but whatever, and AFAIK the browser is only in XBMCBUNTU...

One question though...
Last night my N40L gave me the WEIRDEST error where the HP logo was still the normal blue, but my screen just stayed black with 3 white lines down the center after a HARD reboot. This happened after I HARD rebooted the system seeing that my OPENELEC wont shutdown when I tell it to. It just hangs! So I decided to remove the MOBO to smell if anything burnt and checking for anything that might of damaged. Every seemed fine.. Plugged it in again, and it booted it up fine like nothing happened...

I'm starting to think this is a VERY unreliable machine, because this isn't the first time I've experienced this.

Plus Why in all the name in of ALL that's HOLY does my OPENELEC hang when I tell it to shut down (using version 2.0.0), has anybody found a fix for this?!?!

UPDATE: my N40L keeps on crashing more and more regularly on me ever since I started using OPENELEC... Most of the times it just hangs when I try and use NAVI X... Are any of you guys experiencing the same thing with 2.0.0?

Xbmc has crashed twice in 6 months. It just restarts itself. Other than that box is rock solid. Is yours overheating perhaps?

This dam server has given me endless issues. Connected a usb drive to it to transfe stuff over, then everything was transferred over. Restarted and everything was gone. Restarted again and then it couldn't find the boot partition. Went into bios and it was trying to boot off usb. Changed it to boot off hdd. Saved and exited, then it tried to boot off usb again. Checked bios and everything changed back to usb booting again. Everytime I tried to change and save settings it just keeps resetting itself back to booting off something that doesn't exsist.

I've upgraded to 3 beta 2... Busy reimporting my libraries now.
Any config tweaks needed to get it working with HDMI audio?

snail, if you've taken out the motherboard tray to install RAM, then I'd suggest that you ensure that the HDD connector is plugged in very well on the motherboard. I had quite a lot of HDD detection issues initially with mine when I didn't plug in it properly.

Well assuming you can get an HP for R1600 you'd at best have a 1.5 Ghz duel core Athlon II with 2GB RAM and pretty useless VGA-out graphics.
The E350 (R750) with 4GB RAM (R200) and a nice case (R350) comes to R1300 and you have a faster CPU with onboard HD 6130 graphics (VGA & HDMI), SATA3... just to name a few advantageous.

Where did you find an E350 for R750?

Interesting build though, my consider it for my next NAS, but you didn't mention PSU, which is an extra, unless you willing to use a generic PSU that you get with some cases

*Edit*: With the N40L, you also get a 250GB HDD, which is handy, and you limited to 4 Sata ports on the E350 all in one board, which is less than the N40L, after the Bios tweek, and if you still buying a PSU, it starts to make the N40L look way better, I'd rather spend R200 more on the N40L and add 4GB of RAM

If you using it as an HTPC, maybe the custom build suits the situation better, but as a file/download server, it's hard to beat
(And if you not using a crappy generic PSU, then you would probably be able to use the extra PSU money, and get a GPU for the N40L, all in all, it will probably come to the same in price)

The only real advantage of the custom build is that you can expand over 4 HDD's, but semi-decent HBA's are somewhet rare here and expensive, and RAID cards are a waist for expanding sata ports, especially for small home server build, esspecially if you playing R1000+ for just the card
/edit

But I'm pleased with my Microserver at the moment
Running 4x2TB WD Greens in RAIDZ (learning FreeBSD is a bitch for a *nix Noob)
