HP ProLiant MicroServer

I hope someone can help me with this ****ing htpc!! I have never worked on linux or xbmc before so I have no idea what I am doing. I installed openelec from usb drive to the drive which came with the machine. Now I'm trying to follow the milkmans guide to configure samba so I can see my drives that's in the machine. I have 3 drives inside which I would like to sort.

When I take the milkmans samba.conf file and copy it to the config files, what should I do after that? I have no ****ing idea what to edit or what the **** to do! If I just copy and paste the file, reboot xbmc I can see disk1 disk2 disk3 and disk4 but I can't access any drive or see what's on those drives from my windows pc. I can only see what's on disk1.

When I try and access disk2-disk4 I get a error message \\openelec\disk4 is not accessible. You might not have blah blah blah!!!!

Is there anyone that can explain this in the easiest way please because this is ***!

Why not just install Windows 7?

I got another MicroServer this morning at Esquire Midrand for R1252.00 including VAT. :D

As much as I respect the Milkman process I find I mostly unnecessary. Openelec automatically mounts the the drives in openelec/media/drive names. There are reasons to manually mount but I doubt it is worth it.

Haven't used it either. Start from scratch, fresh install. Check the openelec forums for network access. No Linux knowledge.

It was quite simple if i remember correctly (almost pre setup). As long as you've setup a username in openelec and allowed network access, it should work. Just browse to the IP address.

Again the openelec wiki and forums are pretty useful.

I'm not sure if it was on special. I went there on the 31st December. Picked up a box and scanned it on the price check point and it came out at R1252.00 Including Tax. And that's what they gave me at the check out. :)

Their website shows that they have stock in Midrand and Cape Town. It's priced at R1099 excluding VAT. Very nice price. I wouldn't mind getting one myself and load OS X on it.

Question - is it necessary to install a GFX card to optimally run XBMC on the micro server?
I installed XBMC on my N36, hooked up it up to my TV (vga cable) and used a usb sound card and it could play everything, it only battled abit on one 1080i file.

I ordered Gigabyte GeForce GT 610, now having 2nd doubts about the benefit it will give me over the on board chip (Radeon HD 4200)? Sound ? better picture quality ?

Going to d/l Samsung's demo "Oceanic Life" 44MBit/s bitrate 1080p file to see if I can see the difference between the on board and the GT610 when it arrives.

A dedicated graphics card is a must have if you want to use it for a media server. The onboard graphics will struggle at 1080p and will push the CPU hard the whole time. It's also a bonus having HDMI for output as it will deliver much better audio and video.

Anyone running openelec tried running the rom launcher add on and playing some classics?

I am tempted but not sure the hardware is up to it.

Wanted to ask if you guys are aware of the new HP Microserver N54L and when it will be available locally?

The ones we got from Esquire don't even have onboard sound, so even if you plan to use the onboard graphics you'll still need to get a sound card. Rather just get a dedicated graphics card with HDMI and kill two birds with one stone.

I can't seem to figure out how to make the thing boot when I have a USB drive plugged in. It always wants to boot first from the USB drive, and finds no OS there. But in the boot order option in the BIOS there is no option to select an internal hard drive as the first boot device.

I am not 100% sure, but check the "boot from HDD" option. Most computer BIOS have 2 options, one to specify the boot device order, eg CD, HDD, Network, Removable device.

There is a second option, HDD boot order. Removable flash drives don't count as "removable devices", those refer to floppy disks :wtf:

Edit your HDD boot order and make sure your primary hard drive is chosen, you will see your flash drive in that list as a "hard drive" lol.

You need to change the USB priority.

Default is High so it will always boot off USB first.

I tried searching around without much luck.

Has anyone managed to install a USB 3.0 card in these microservers? Any advice, tips or tricks?
