Hey,

Need to buy a laptop tomorrow, in terms of after purchase service, repairs etc which of these 3 brands are better? Even if it costs an extra R500-1000 for warranty etc.

Thanks

After purchase service is going to suck pretty much all round for consumer level models.

I'd take a good look at Lenovo's thinkpads.

In terms of warranty & repairs Dell laptops are the best in SA.
Lenovo's repair services are terrible: they take very long and do not always replace the components
* or at least this was the case with my brother's Lenovo that he had repaired like 6 months ago

Could you perhaps tell us what you want to use the laptop for and what your budget is?

Like with some of the business class laptops you can get docking stations, 3 year next business day on-site replacement warranty, etc.

I'd choose Acer above the three mentioned. Had excellent service from them.

Up to about 10 to 12k. Closer to 10 would be best, not because of affordability but dont really need anything excessive.

Im asking on behalf of my sister, it is primarily for business use. Email, accounting system(pastel), medical aid claims program for patients. Reason I ask is because I was thinking about the HP on site support!

I was looking at this in terms of specs: http://www.incredible.co.za/ProductDescription.aspx?SKU=82341

MUST Have windows 7

For that kind of money go for a Lenovo Thinkpad. I like the X series. Just got my 2nd one (X230 and X300 before).

Your sis will like the X1 ...

If its for business, get whatever the IT dept at her work currently favours....they are the ones who will have to deal with it.

Also....Pastel on a laptop...make sure the backups are solid.

She is her own business, her laptop fell down the stairs :) but she is due for an upgrade!

That's why I asked mainly about after service as shell be dealing with it, what laptops come with onsite support?

Also dont have to use the full budget if it's possible!

In my experience the build quality of the IBM and Lenovo Thinkpads are rock solid, hence never had to bother with after sales warranty service. Don't look at the idea pads. I think Dell have improved from their previous bad rep (was a while ago), the 3 year next of day onsite warranty sounds like a real bonus however the general service given in comparison to other countries is rather inefficient and lacking, at the very least in my case when our HP server had an issue and the tech from HP made the next business day warranty look like a next business week warranty.

Thinkpad X1 Carbon is my suggestion.

Dell and Lenovo are both very good.

But I'm going to recommend you avoid HP laptops. I'm saying this based on their
DV series laptops. I don't know how good their other ranges are.

In general, HP makes good quality stuff, I've just lost faith in their Laptops.

In Durban, I found the Dell support fantastic. Called at 4:30pm about a buggered screen. 7:30 next morning techie rocks up at my work, replaces screen, sees that CPU fan is noisy, so replaces, and replaces DVD drive because it's cracked. He was gone by 8. I had purchased a 3 year next business day on site warranty for about R600 at the time. Sadly the warranty is now done, but the laptop is still grafting well, bar some cracked chassis bits. But it was a R5000 entry level Dell. :)

So the gist of my post is, Dell is great.

Thanks for all the comments so far, anyone else had experience with HP besides there DV series as mentioned above!

we used dell extensively at my previous company as well as the present one. fantastic after sales service. really couldnt be better
