HSDPA over wifi or bluetooth on Vista (home basic)?

Hi there.

I'm trying to share an internet connection between two laptops on Vista over either wifi (ad-hoc mode) or bluetooth.

The one laptop connects to the internet via a Huawei E220.

On wifi I did manage to create a network but the internet didn't work on the second laptop. Also shared folders were not accessible - just the public folders were accessible.

On bluetooth I tried bluetooth dial up networking which asks you for username, password and dial up number. I left all this blank as the first laptop was already connected to the internet via the E220. After dialing the connection fails.

I am guessing you want both of them online at the same time? In that case, dial-up networking won't work. What you need to do is activate Internet Connection Sharing on the one notebook with the modem (share the Dial Up connection that gets created with by the VMC software).

Next, you would need to create either a Personal Area Network over bluetooth or you would need to get a home network up and running using WiFi (create an adhoc network). I am not too sure about Vista - but I guess you would probably need to set up manual IPs for the machines. The one with the internet connection (i.e., the modem) will be 192.168.0.1 and the other one you can set to 192.168.0.2. The Internet Gateway on the second machine will then be 192.168.0.1 (i.e., the first machine)

Perhaps everything has become easier with Vista - but this is how I would set it up using Win XP.

just a note also, that when you set up ip settings manually you must enter the dns settings as well. to get the dns addresses for your connection do the following on the laptop running the modem.

- make sure that it is connected (online)
- start menu -> run -> CMD -> enter
- then type: ipconfig /all

that will give you a list of all your networking devices and there details. use the dns addresses for the hsdpa device and enter it into the manual settings dialog box for the tcp/ip properties of your wifi connections

When I used XP to enable connection sharing on my HSDPA modem it forced me to use xp's DHCP server so I didn't have to worry about setting manual ip's.

Mmm, never got that to work properly, but I know it is supposed to. I did find it easier just to type in the IP adress myself, but if you travel a lot and tend to jump to different Access Points, DHCP would be better.

dhcp worked for lan requirements but it is a bit dodgey as far as gateway settings are concerned

how do i activate dhcp when there is no option to do this

under the tcp/ip properties for your interface theres an option for obtain an ip address automatically (which is dhcp) and the other one use the following ip (which is manual settings)

I had some time yesterday to try it out. It worked great with manual ips and the DNS settings from the internet connection. I didn't try auto ips.
