Hi Today I visited the Pavillion Vodashop and discovered they are waiting for 100 swap cards and 600 for Prepaid orders But 3 points came out in the discussion
1/ there is a 20% reduction in rates on June 1st 2/ but this only applies to 3g cards or lower 3/ HSDPA no reduction Can some in the " Know " please inform us all of what's really happening I personally am happy with the speed @ 3G and would rather save the R70 on the basic rate " untill another revolution comes along "

HSDPA is very much faster than 3G, but I agree with Vodacom3G. The cost involved with 3G is way too great to actually benefit from the difference.

A couple of questions on this pricing, and the swop-out program:

There were reports (on this forum and other places) about the roll-out of HSUPA toward the end of this year. If you don't swop-out the 3G card now, will you
1) have the opportunity to swop 3G for HSUPA, or should you "stay with the program"
2) still have the option of a 3G contract when new technology comes along?

Pondering Pinky, pondering...

I have upgraded to an HSDPA card - is it possible to still opt for the lower 3G rates and still keep the card?

so here is dumb question. If you have an HSDPA card, but you only connecting on standard 3G, what rates do you pay? And second, if you connect on HSDPA, but your transmission speed isnt improved because you too far from base or whatever the circumstances, i.e. you still getting the same speeds, what price do you pay???? This is all a gymick, cause you never get 1.8MB/s, infact mostly get around 700k ,so you not benefiting from a 20% reduction, getting similiar speeds on occassion and paying more than your neighbour.

Well, firstly 700Kb/s is still around twice as fast as you'll get on 3G. So for an increase of 25% (3G -> HSDPA) in cost, you get a 100% increase in throughput. Or something like that.

To answer your question, you buy the access speed capability upfront, so if you bought a HSDPA package, you pay that rate irrespective of your connection speed at any given point in time.

You're buying a maximum speed cap, in a sense. With 3G it's 384Kb/s, with HSDPA closer to 1.5Mb/s.

Best I ever saw was around 1.7Mb/s. See attached jpg.

what if u bought your 3g card cash ( not on contract ) and then swapped for HSDPA card - u not on a data bundle contract - u only buy bundles adhoc every month...can u now choose if u buying a 3g or a hsdpa bundle?

My situation exactly. Only I am paying R2/Meg "Out Of Bundle" rates  at the 'mo with about 700Kb/s thruput on average (1.1Mb/s the other night :D ) so am keen to see what is going to happen on the Pre Paid Bundle thing. I don't want to get involved with any contract (even 4u) before then.

Yes, but I'm not sure if you can switch, i.e. 3G one month, HSDPA the next.
