Hsdpa

Tower in Irene Upgraded

Seems Irene Film Lab is up with HSDPA since last night.

Got 1.65Mbps peak and about 1.3Mbps sustained downloading latest Google Earth. I cannot really see a difference when surfing. It seems the latency is now the bigger issues as opposed to the actual page download. To explain, you will enter a URL or click on a link, nothing happens while the URL gets resolved, and then the page appears. Still not quite an ADSL experience.

I use a Huawei E620 card.

Vodacom

Put a friends Vodacom sim into my Sierrawireless 850 card, put autoconnect on and connected 5 bars HSDPA immediately. Download speed was disappointing though - 35 kilobytes/second. This is in Lyttelton close to Unitas hospital. As soon as Vodacom has prepaid data I will I use up my prepaid databundle on MTN, switch to the Vodacom prepaid data bundle, when used up back to MTN etc. etc.

Will my existing Sierra Edge Card (AC775) support HSDPA, or will it need a firmware upgrade or replacement ?

Nope, 775 will not work on HSDPA even with a firmware update.
AC775 is GSM/EGSM only on 850/900/1800/1900. 3G/HSDPA is 2100Mhz in EMEA

Vodacom First

Quote in todays Financial Mail:

Vodacom has drawn first blood in its battle with rival MTN to create an updated and faster version of their third-generation (3G) cellular networks.

MTN Group CEO Phuthuma Nhleko caused a stir when he announced at a presentation to shareholders and analysts last month that MTN SA had already launched its high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) service. HSDPA is sometimes referred to as enhanced 3G or super 3G and is capable of delivering download speeds of up to 1,8 Mbit/s. That's five times faster than conventional 3G networks. Later, upgrades to the technology will result in speeds increasing several-fold again.

But MTN's announcement that it had switched on its HSDPA network rings somewhat hollow as the data cards consumers need to access the network at the new, higher speeds will not be available for several weeks yet. Vodacom's cards, on the other hand, are already available in stores. MTN's HSDPA network is live but, for the moment, its subscribers have no way of accessing it.
